Most free data recovery tools focus on finding deleted photographs, documents, and videos. TestDisk focuses on something more fundamental: restoring access to an entire partition or repairing the disk structures that tell a computer where its files are stored.

That difference makes TestDisk unusually powerful.

It can search for deleted partitions, rebuild a damaged partition table, repair FAT and NTFS boot sectors, restore an NTFS Master File Table from its mirror, locate backup superblocks on Linux file systems, and copy files from partitions that an operating system can no longer open normally.

It can also undelete files from FAT, exFAT, NTFS, and ext2 storage. However, ordinary file recovery is not its strongest or broadest function. When the file system is badly damaged, or a user needs to recover many file formats by scanning raw storage, TestDisk’s companion tool, PhotoRec, is usually the better option.

TestDisk is completely free, open source, portable, and available for Windows, macOS, Linux, and several older or specialist systems. There is no recovery limit, subscription, device restriction, paid upgrade, or trial that stops before the files are saved.

The trade-off is usability.

TestDisk runs inside a text-based interface controlled through the keyboard. It expects the user to recognise physical disks, partition tables, file systems, boot sectors, and partition boundaries. What Is TestDisk?

TestDisk is an open-source data recovery utility developed by CGSecurity.

Its primary purpose is to recover lost partitions and repair logical disk structures. It can help when a drive is still detected by the computer, but a partition has disappeared, appears as RAW, refuses to mount, or no longer allows the operating system to access its files.

How We Reviewed TestDisk

This review is based on researched product analysis rather than a claimed laboratory recovery benchmark.

We examined TestDisk’s official documentation, current stable and development downloads, supported operating systems, partition layouts, file systems, partition-recovery process, boot-sector repair tools, undelete capabilities, disk-image support, licensing, safety guidance, and relationship with PhotoRec.

For this review, we also compared TestDisk with EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard, Disk Drill, Stellar Data Recovery, Wondershare Recoverit, R-Studio, Ontrack EasyRecovery, Recuva, and PhotoRec.

We have not assigned a universal recovery-success percentage. TestDisk’s result depends on what remains on the affected storage.

Important factors include whether:

  • the lost partition has been overwritten
  • a new partition was created over the same space
  • the original boot sector or its backup remains
  • file-system metadata is still readable
  • the deleted files were fragmented
  • an SSD has processed TRIM

What Is TestDisk Best At?

TestDisk is most valuable when the problem involves the structure of a drive rather than one missing file.

Recovering a deleted partition

A partition can disappear after:

TestDisk scans the physical drive for signs of previous file systems and partition boundaries.

Its Quick Search checks for likely partitions and displays results as they are found. When the expected partition is missing, Deeper Search examines the disk more thoroughly.

The most useful step is not immediately selecting Write. It is highlighting each discovered partition and pressing the file-list key to inspect its contents.

A credible partition result should have:

  • The expected size
  • Reasonable starting and ending sectors
  • The correct file system
  • Familiar folders
  • Files from the expected period
  • No impossible overlap with another required partition

Only after the complete partition layout makes sense should the partition table be written.

Rebuilding a damaged partition table

The partition table tells the operating system where partitions begin and end.

When this information is deleted or corrupted, the file data may still exist even though the operating system sees unallocated space or asks to initialise the disk.

TestDisk can detect previous partitions and rebuild the table using the confirmed results.

This can restore access without copying every file individually. It is also one of TestDisk’s riskiest functions because an incorrect partition table can hide working partitions or make the layout more confusing.

Before writing:

  1. Confirm the correct physical drive.
  2. Check the drive capacity.
  3. Inspect the files inside every required partition.
  4. Verify that important partitions do not overlap.
  5. Save accessible files first when possible.
  6. Create a disk image when the data is valuable.
  7. Write the table only when the complete layout is credible.

TestDisk does not automatically know which old partition matters most. A disk that has been repartitioned several times may contain traces of multiple previous layouts.

Quick Search looks for lost partitions using the selected partition-table format and recognised file-system structures.

It is usually the correct first step because it is faster and may find recently deleted partitions without reading every possible location in the same depth.

Quick Search can be enough after:

  • An accidental partition deletion
  • Minor partition-table damage
  • A drive suddenly appearing unallocated
  • Missing volume after a software error
  • A damaged partition entry

TestDisk displays discovered partitions while the scan is running. Each result should be inspected before continuing.

Deeper Search performs a more thorough scan when Quick Search does not find the required partition.

It may take several hours on a large or slow drive. The time depends on the storage size, connection, condition, and number of readable sectors.

Deeper Search is useful when:

  • The disk was repartitioned
  • The old partition boundaries are difficult to locate
  • Quick Search found only part of the previous layout
  • Multiple file systems existed on the disk
  • The partition table is heavily damaged

A longer search does not automatically make the result correct. Deeper Search can find old, overlapping, and no-longer-relevant partitions.

The user still has to identify which layout represents the data that should be restored.

Repairing FAT, exFAT, and NTFS Boot Sectors

A partition can exist correctly while its file-system boot sector is damaged.

The boot sector stores information the operating system needs to understand the file system. When it is corrupted, a partition may appear as RAW, unreadable, or unformatted even though the files remain on the drive.

TestDisk can compare the primary and backup boot sectors for FAT32 and NTFS. When the main copy is damaged and the backup is valid, it can copy the backup over the primary boot sector.

It can also rebuild a FAT or NTFS boot sector by detecting the required file-system parameters.

A safer workflow is:

  1. Open the Advanced menu.
  2. Select the affected partition.
  3. Open the Boot menu.
  4. Compare the main and backup boot-sector status.
  5. Use List before writing whenever available.
  6. Confirm that the expected folders can be displayed.
  7. Copy important files to another drive.
  8. Write or restore the boot sector only after validation.

The ability to list files is important. A boot-sector reconstruction that allows TestDisk to display the correct folders is much more credible than one based only on detected geometry.


Repairing the NTFS Master File Table

NTFS stores file and folder records inside the Master File Table, commonly called the MFT.

It also keeps a partial mirror of critical MFT records. When the main MFT is damaged, but its mirror remains usable, TestDisk may be able to restore the damaged information from the backup.

This does not mean TestDisk can rebuild every corrupt NTFS volume.

The mirror contains only limited critical records rather than a complete backup of every file entry. If both the MFT and its mirror are damaged, TestDisk may report that it cannot repair them.

In that situation, file extraction or signature-based recovery may be safer than continuing to repair the original volume.


Finding Linux Backup Superblocks

Ext2, ext3, and ext4 file systems keep backup superblocks at different locations.

The superblock stores key information about the file system. When the primary copy is damaged, the volume may fail to mount even though backup superblocks remain.

TestDisk can locate these backup superblocks and display the values needed to run the appropriate Linux file-system check using an alternate copy.

TestDisk does not silently repair the entire ext file system through this function. It helps identify the backup location so that a proper file-system repair utility can use it.

This is a technical workflow and should be performed on an image or backup when the data is important.

Repairing HFS and HFS+ Volume Headers

HFS and HFS+ volumes maintain backup volume-header information.

TestDisk can compare the main and backup header and restore the primary copy from the backup in applicable cases.

This feature applies to older Apple file systems. It should not be confused with full APFS repair or undelete support.

Mac users dealing with modern internal APFS storage may need a different recovery tool, particularly when encryption, Apple Silicon security, or SSD TRIM is involved.


Can TestDisk Recover Deleted Files?

Yes, but its direct undelete support is narrower than its partition-recovery coverage.

TestDisk can undelete files from:

  • FAT12
  • FAT16
  • FAT32
  • exFAT
  • NTFS
  • ext2

For NTFS, TestDisk scans deleted entries in the Master File Table. Deleted files can be selected and copied to another destination.

For FAT and exFAT, it reads remaining directory information and attempts to identify the clusters where the file was stored.

File undelete works best when the:

  • deletion happened recently
  • source was stopped quickly
  • file-system records remain available
  • file was not overwritten
  • destination is on another drive
  • file was not heavily fragmented

TestDisk does not restore the file in place. It copies the deleted file to a destination selected by the user. This is safer because it avoids deliberately writing the recovered content back into the source file system.

Where TestDisk’s undelete feature is limited

TestDisk is not a general file-carving tool.

It does not provide direct metadata-based undelete across every file system it can recognise. For example, its partition recovery can work with a broader range of Linux, Unix, and Apple storage structures than its undelete function.

When TestDisk cannot find the deleted file, PhotoRec may still recover its content by scanning for file signatures.

The trade-off is that PhotoRec usually cannot preserve the original filename or folder structure.

A practical recovery often uses both tools.

Try TestDisk first when the entire partition disappeared. If TestDisk identifies the correct partition and lists the original folders, it may restore the structure or let you copy files with their names intact.

Use PhotoRec when the file system is too damaged for normal listing or when the partition cannot be reconstructed safely.


Working With Disk Images

TestDisk can analyse supported disk-image files instead of accessing the physical drive directly.

Supported workflows include raw images such as .dd and EnCase E01 images. TestDisk and PhotoRec can also work with split EnCase sets.

Working from an image is safer because:

  • The original drive remains unchanged.
  • Scans can be repeated without rereading the device.
  • Different recovery tools can inspect the same preserved copy.
  • An incorrect repair attempt affects the copy rather than the source.
  • The original state remains available for professional recovery.

TestDisk can create a basic raw copy of a selected partition in some workflows. However, it is not designed as a complete replacement for specialist imaging tools that manage failing sectors, repeated timeouts, unstable heads, or controlled retries.

A healthy or lightly questionable device may be imaged using normal software. A clicking or rapidly degrading hard drive needs a more cautious approach.


When TestDisk Probably Cannot Recover Your Data

The old partition has been overwritten

TestDisk may find traces of an old partition even after a new volume was created over the same space.

Recovering the partition table does not restore sectors that were overwritten by the new file system or files. The old partition may become visible while much of its content remains damaged.

When several old partitions overlap, copying files out is often safer than writing one of them back into the current partition table.

Deleted data has been reused

TestDisk can find a deleted file entry while the storage clusters have already been assigned to another file.

The recovered file may then:

  • Refuse to open
  • Contain unrelated data
  • Have missing sections
  • Produce archive errors
  • Display only part of an image
  • Stop during video playback

No partition repair can reverse overwritten file content.

SSD TRIM has cleared the blocks

TestDisk can detect partitions and file systems on SSDs, but it cannot recover data that the SSD has already cleared internally.

TRIM may remove deleted file content quickly, particularly from an actively used system drive.

Partition recovery can still help when the partition metadata was deleted, but the underlying volume data remains. Individual deleted-file recovery is much less predictable after TRIM.

The drive has physical damage

Stop using TestDisk when a drive:

  • Clicks, grinds, or repeatedly resets
  • Becomes unusually hot
  • Produces a burning smell
  • Disconnects during scanning
  • Freezes the computer
  • Is inconsistently detected
  • Has suffered water, fire, or impact damage
  • Shows rapidly increasing read errors

TestDisk’s Deeper Search can read the entire device. That may place unnecessary stress on failing hardware.

The correct first step for an unstable drive is usually controlled imaging, not partition repair.

The wrong repair was written

TestDisk allows users to write partition tables, boot sectors, MBR code, and certain repaired file-system structures.

A wrong write does not necessarily destroy all data immediately, but it can make the layout more confusing and lead to further operating-system writes.

This is why file listing, imaging, and copying accessible data should come before repair whenever practical.

The files require content repair

TestDisk does not repair damaged JPEGs, MP4 videos, Word documents, databases, or archives.

It may recover the file exactly as it remains on the disk. When that recovered content is incomplete, another repair tool may be required.

Is TestDisk Easy to Use?

TestDisk is easier than its appearance suggests, but harder than most consumer recovery applications.

The interface uses text menus, arrow keys, Enter, letter shortcuts, and confirmation prompts. It does not require typing complex commands for a normal partition search.

A basic lost-partition workflow looks like this:

  1. Start TestDisk with the required permissions.
  2. Create or skip the log file.
  3. Select the physical disk.
  4. Confirm the detected partition-table type.
  5. Choose Analyse.
  6. Run Quick Search.
  7. Highlight a result and list its files.
  8. Use Deeper Search when necessary.
  9. Mark the required partitions correctly.
  10. Write the table only after verification.

The problem is not the number of key presses. It is understanding what each result means.

A beginner may not know:

  • Which disk is the source
  • Whether to select MBR or GPT
  • Whether a partition should be Primary or Logical
  • Which overlapping partition is correct
  • Whether a backup boot sector is reliable
  • Whether writing a repair is safer than copying files

TestDisk does not disguise these decisions. That makes it powerful for knowledgeable users and intimidating for everyone else.


Stable vs Development Version

The current stable TestDisk release is 7.2.

CGSecurity also provides TestDisk 7.3-WIP, where WIP means Work in Progress. The official documentation says the development version is often recommended because fixes are not normally backported to the stable release.

The WIP archive can change without receiving a new filename, which makes it less predictable for documentation, repeatable testing, and business deployment.

Choose the stable version when:

  • You want a fixed, documented release.
  • The stable version detects the drive correctly.
  • You are following a guide written for TestDisk 7.2.
  • You need repeatable results.

Consider the WIP version when:

Installing TestDisk

TestDisk is portable on Windows.

The Windows download arrives as an archive. Extract the complete folder, including its subdirectories, and run the appropriate TestDisk executable. A normal installation wizard is not required.

On Linux, TestDisk is available through the package repositories of many distributions. It can also be downloaded as an official archive or built from source.

A Windows copy of TestDisk can inspect a supported Linux partition, while a Linux system can analyse NTFS, FAT, HFS+, and other recognised structures.

TestDisk usually detects the partition-table type automatically. The default is normally correct, but it should still match the layout used when the data was accessible.

Recognising a file system does not mean every TestDisk function works with it.

Direct deleted-file recovery is mainly available for FAT, exFAT, NTFS, and ext2. Boot-sector repair also focuses on specific file systems. Other formats may be supported for partition detection, file listing, structural recovery, or locating backup information.
