Stellar Data Recovery Review: Which Edition Is Worth Buying?

Stellar Data Recovery looks simple when you first open it. Choose what you want to recover, select the drive, start the scan, and save the files it finds.

The buying decision is more complicated.

Stellar divides its recovery tools across Free, Standard, Professional, Premium, Technician, and Toolkit editions. The cheapest paid version handles deleted and formatted files, but lost-partition recovery, crashed-computer recovery, disk imaging, drive monitoring, photo repair, video repair, RAID recovery, NAS recovery, and virtual-machine recovery are placed in higher plans.

This means the lowest price is not always the price that applies to your recovery problem.

The Windows Free edition currently recovers 1GB by default, with another 1GB available after sharing the software on social media. However, each recovered file must be no larger than 100MB. The Mac Free edition offers 1GB with the same 100MB individual-file limit. That allowance is useful for documents and smaller photos, but it quickly becomes restrictive for RAW images, videos, archives, and large project files.

Paid Windows plans currently start at $59.99 per year, while the more useful Professional edition costs $89.99 per year. Stellar also offers licenses described as lifetime, although its licensing policy defines a lifetime or perpetual license as a 10-year usage term, not unlimited use forever. Annual subscriptions are set to auto-renew unless the buyer changes the renewal setting.

So, is Stellar Data Recovery worth buying?

For basic deletion or formatting, the Standard edition may be enough. For a missing partition, non-booting computer, disk image, or failing drive, Professional is the more sensible starting point. Premium mainly makes sense for photographers and videographers who also need photo and video repair.

Quick Summary

Stellar Data Recovery is a strong consumer recovery program with a clear interface and broad recovery coverage. Its free allowance is more practical than Disk Drill’s, but the 100MB per-file restriction limits its usefulness for videos and larger media. The Professional edition offers the best balance of recovery features and price, while Premium is mainly valuable for damaged photos and videos.

What Is Stellar Data Recovery?

Stellar Data Recovery is a family of recovery applications for Windows and macOS. It is designed to retrieve files that have been deleted, lost during formatting, made inaccessible by file-system damage, or hidden inside missing and RAW partitions.

The software can scan internal hard drives, SSDs, USB drives, external storage, memory cards, optical media, disk images, encrypted drives, and other supported devices. Higher editions expand the product into crashed-system recovery, RAID reconstruction, NAS recovery, Linux storage, and virtual-machine disk recovery.

The basic recovery process is intentionally simple:

  1. Choose the type of file you want to recover.
  2. Select the affected drive or location.
  3. Run a normal or deep scan.
  4. Preview the files.
  5. Recover them to another storage device.

Stellar is more approachable than R-Studio, TestDisk, and PhotoRec. It also offers more advanced recovery paths than Recuva. Its closest consumer competitors are EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard, Disk Drill, and Wondershare Recoverit.

The important limitation is that Stellar is logical data recovery software. It can scan a readable storage device, but it cannot physically repair a broken drive, replace failed read heads, rebuild damaged electronics, or safely open a sealed hard drive.

How We Reviewed Stellar Data Recovery

This review is based on researched product analysis. It does not claim that TinyQuip conducted a controlled laboratory recovery test.

We examined Stellar’s official Windows and Mac product pages, pricing store, Free-edition conditions, feature comparisons, licensing rules, refund policy, support resources, recovery guides, technical requirements, and higher-edition tools.

We also compared Stellar with EaseUS, Disk Drill, Recoverit, R-Studio, Ontrack EasyRecovery, Recuva, TestDisk, and PhotoRec.

Note: We have not repeated Stellar’s advertised recovery-rate numbers as a guaranteed result. A universal recovery percentage is not meaningful because success depends on the source device and what happened after deletion.

The most important factors include:

  • Whether new data has overwritten the deleted content
  • Whether an SSD has processed TRIM
  • Whether the original file system remains readable
  • Whether files were fragmented
  • Whether the drive has bad sectors or physical damage
  • How much the storage device was used after data loss
  • Whether the user securely erased or reformatted the drive

The safest way to judge Stellar is to scan the actual storage device and preview the specific files you need.

What Can Stellar Data Recovery Recover?

Stellar covers most common logical data-loss situations, although the required edition changes depending on the problem.

Accidentally deleted files

The Free and Standard editions are suitable for files deleted from a folder, desktop, Recycle Bin, external drive, USB device, or memory card.

Deleted data may remain on the storage device until the same space is reused. This is why the computer or drive should be used as little as possible after the loss.

Installing Stellar, downloading files, opening large programs, or running system updates on the affected drive can overwrite recoverable data. When possible, install the software on another drive or computer.

Formatted drives and memory cards

Stellar Standard and higher editions can scan formatted hard drives, external storage, USB drives, and memory cards.

A quick format often replaces file-system structures without deliberately overwriting every storage block. This can leave recoverable content behind. A secure erase or full overwrite is a different situation and usually leaves much less for recovery software to find.

The original filenames and folder structure may not survive. In those cases, Stellar’s Deep Scan searches for recognizable file signatures and reconstructs files by type.

RAW and inaccessible drives

Windows may describe a damaged or unreadable file system as RAW. The drive may appear connected while Windows asks the user to format it before use.

Do not format the drive immediately when important files remain on it.

Stellar can scan RAW and inaccessible storage for files that are still present. The Standard edition includes RAW recovery, while Professional adds better support for missing and inaccessible partitions.

Missing or deleted partitions

Partition recovery begins with the Professional edition.

A partition may disappear because of accidental deletion, repartitioning, file-system corruption, an operating-system failure, or a damaged partition table. Stellar Professional includes a “Can’t Find Drive” workflow for locating missing partitions and scanning unallocated storage.

This makes Professional a much more useful purchase than Standard when the entire volume has disappeared.

Crashed or non-booting computers

Professional and higher editions include recovery from non-booting systems.

On Windows, Stellar can create bootable media that lets the user access and scan storage without starting the installed operating system normally. The Mac version includes recovery options for crashed or non-booting Macs.

This can help when Windows or macOS is damaged, but the internal storage remains readable.

It cannot repair physical drive failure.

Encrypted drives

Stellar supports recovery from certain encrypted storage, including BitLocker drives on Windows and APFS-encrypted storage on Mac.

The correct password or recovery key is still required. Recovery software does not remove strong encryption merely because the user has lost access to the files.

Damaged optical media

Stellar Professional for Windows includes recovery from scratched or corrupt CDs and DVDs.

This feature is less important than it once was, but it can still be useful for old photo archives, backup discs, video projects, and business records stored on optical media. The Standard edition does not include optical-media recovery.

Time Machine and Boot Camp storage

The Mac editions support files stored on Mac-compatible drives, Time Machine storage, and Boot Camp partitions.

The Mac Professional plan also includes lost-volume recovery, disk imaging, drive monitoring, and non-booting Mac recovery.

When Stellar Probably Cannot Recover Your Files

No recovery application can reconstruct information that no longer exists.

The file has been overwritten

A deleted filename may still appear even when some or all of its content has been replaced.

The recovered file may then:

  • Refuse to open
  • Return as an empty file
  • Contain unrelated data
  • Display only part of an image
  • Play only the beginning of a video
  • Produce errors during extraction
  • Lose its original filename and folder

A preview is useful evidence, but it is not a complete guarantee.

SSD TRIM has removed the data

Modern SSDs can clear deleted storage blocks through TRIM and internal garbage collection.

Stellar supports SSD scanning, but that does not mean every deleted SSD file remains available. If the operating system and SSD have already cleared the relevant blocks, ordinary recovery software cannot restore them.

Internal storage on newer Macs can be particularly difficult because of TRIM, hardware encryption, security protections, and tightly integrated storage hardware.

The storage device has physical damage

Stop using software when the drive:

  • Clicks or grinds
  • Repeatedly spins up and stops
  • Disconnects during every scan
  • Becomes unusually hot
  • Produces a burning smell
  • Has been exposed to water or fire
  • Has a broken connector
  • Prevents the computer from responding

Professional recovery laboratories use specialised equipment and controlled environments for physically damaged drives. Repeated scanning can make the problem worse.

The files were securely erased

Secure deletion tools are designed to prevent recovery by overwriting data or issuing storage-level erase commands.

Stellar, EaseUS, Disk Drill, Recuva, and PhotoRec cannot reliably recreate properly erased information.

Encryption credentials are unavailable

Stellar can work with supported encrypted drives, but the password, BitLocker recovery key, or other authentication information is usually still necessary.

Recovery software should not be treated as an encryption bypass.

Installation and First-Time Setup

Stellar uses a guided installation and recovery process. The program first asks what kind of data you want to recover, such as documents, folders, emails, photos, audio, or video. Users can also choose to recover everything.

The next screen asks where the files were lost. Depending on the edition, this may include connected volumes, physical disks, common folders, optical storage, disk images, and missing-drive searches.

This is easier than entering technical scan parameters, but users still need to follow safe recovery practices.

Do not install Stellar on the same drive that contains the deleted files whenever another option is available.

For external storage, install Stellar on the computer and scan the external device. When data was lost from the computer’s internal system drive, consider connecting that drive to another computer or using a bootable recovery method.

Recovered data must be saved to a different drive.

Interface and Ease of Use

Stellar’s interface is designed around decisions that regular users understand.

Instead of starting with partitions and sectors, it asks two simple questions:

  • What do you want to recover?
  • Where was it stored?

The recovery results can be viewed through file types, a folder tree, and a deleted-file list. Users can search the scan results, preview supported files, pause scans, and choose individual items rather than restoring everything.

Recent versions can display recoverable files while scanning, allowing the user to pause and begin recovery without waiting for the full device scan to finish. Stellar also supports saving and loading scan information in applicable editions, which can prevent a large scan from needing to be repeated.

The interface is less cluttered than R-Studio and easier to understand than TestDisk. It is close to EaseUS and Disk Drill in overall approachability.

The main usability problem comes after the scan, when the program asks the user to upgrade. A beginner may not immediately know whether Standard, Professional, or Premium contains the required feature.

Quick Scan and Deep Scan

Stellar uses more than one scanning method.

Quick Scan

Quick Scan searches the existing file-system information for recently deleted files and other straightforward losses.

It is normally faster and more likely to preserve:

  • Original filenames
  • Folder locations
  • File dates
  • Directory structure

Quick Scan should be the first attempt after a normal deletion.

Deep Scan

Deep Scan examines the storage more thoroughly and searches for file signatures.

It is useful when:

  • Quick Scan misses the files
  • The drive was formatted
  • The file system is damaged
  • The volume appears RAW
  • The original directory information is missing
  • The files need to be reconstructed by format

Deep scanning normally takes longer. It can also produce a larger number of files with generic names or missing folders.

A Deep Scan result may be technically successful while still creating a difficult sorting job. Recovering 20,000 unnamed images is very different from recovering the original project folder with its structure intact.

Previewing Files Before Recovery

Stellar allows users to preview supported files before saving them. This is especially important when deciding whether to buy a paid edition.

The preview can help answer:

  • Does the photograph display at full quality?
  • Does the document contain readable pages?
  • Is the video more than a cached thumbnail?
  • Is the required folder structure visible?
  • Are the filenames still intact?
  • Does the file size look reasonable?

Do not test only one file.

Preview several files from different folders, dates, file types, and areas of the drive. For video, inspect the beginning, middle, and end after recovery. For archives, extract the contents rather than assuming that opening the archive proves every item is intact.

The Free edition allows scanning and previewing, but files larger than 100MB cannot be recovered without upgrading.

Disk Imaging, Drive Cloning, and Health Monitoring

Disk imaging and drive-health tools begin with Professional.

Disk imaging

A disk image creates a sector-level copy of a storage device or selected region. Stellar can then scan the image rather than repeatedly reading the original drive.

This is useful when a drive is:

  • Developing bad sectors
  • Reading slowly
  • Disconnecting occasionally
  • Needed for more than one recovery attempt
  • Important enough that the original state should be preserved

The destination drive must have enough free space for the image.

A 2TB physical drive may require close to 2TB of destination space even when the visible files occupy much less.

Drive cloning

Some editions also include drive cloning. This creates a replica of a source drive on another storage device.

Cloning can be helpful when moving away from a questionable disk, but it should not be attempted casually on a severely damaged drive. Professional recovery hardware may be safer when the drive cannot read consistently.

S.M.A.R.T. monitoring

Professional includes drive-health monitoring using available S.M.A.R.T. information. It can track properties such as temperature, performance, health, and reported problem sectors.

S.M.A.R.T. monitoring is useful, but it cannot predict every failure. A drive can report good health shortly before it stops working.

Photo and Video Repair

Photo and video repair are included in Stellar Premium and higher editions.

These tools are intended for files that have already been recovered but remain damaged or unplayable. They may repair file headers, indexes, containers, metadata, thumbnails, and certain structural problems.

They cannot recreate content that was completely overwritten or never recovered.

The distinction is important:

  • Recovery extracts the remaining file data from storage.
  • Repair tries to make the recovered file readable.

Premium supports batch repair for photographs and videos and can extract thumbnails from badly corrupted images. Supported media includes common formats such as JPEG, TIFF, camera RAW formats, MOV, MP4, AVI, MKV, and others.

This is useful for:

  • Photographers recovering damaged RAW or JPEG files
  • Videographers recovering recordings from formatted cards
  • Drone and action-camera users
  • Editors with corrupted MOV or MP4 files
  • Users with large media archives

It is less valuable when the recovery involves Word documents, PDFs, spreadsheets, or email files.

Always preserve an untouched copy of the recovered file before attempting repair.

Stellar Free

Free is useful for documents, PDFs, smaller photographs, and other files under 100MB.

On Windows, 1GB is available by default, while sharing the software unlocks another 1GB. Mac users receive 1GB.

The 100MB per-file limit is the real restriction. A user may have most of the 1GB allowance remaining and still be unable to recover a single 500MB video.

Stellar Standard

Standard removes the recovery-volume and individual-file limits.

It is suitable for:

  • Accidental deletion
  • Emptied Recycle Bin
  • Formatted USB drives
  • Memory-card recovery
  • External-drive recovery
  • RAW storage
  • Supported encrypted drives

It does not include lost-partition search, crashed-system recovery, disk imaging, or drive monitoring.

Stellar Professional

Professional is the best overall plan for serious recovery.

It adds:

  • Lost-partition recovery
  • Non-booting-system recovery
  • Disk imaging
  • Drive monitoring
  • Drive cloning
  • Optical-media recovery on Windows
  • Additional advanced recovery tools

For most users dealing with more than a basic deletion, this is the edition that makes sense.

Stellar Premium

Premium combines Professional with photo and video repair.

Buy it when you are recovering damaged camera files, corrupted recordings, or large media projects. Skip it when the loss involves documents and ordinary folders.

Stellar’s Windows store currently lists Standard at $59.99 annually, Professional at $89.99, and Premium at $99.99. Lifetime prices are $99, $149, and $199, respectively. Mac pricing uses a similar tier structure, although the Standard edition is generally priced higher than Windows. Regional currency, taxes, and active promotions can change the checkout total.

Mac Professional supports Apple Silicon and Intel-based Macs, including encrypted Apple file systems, Time Machine storage, lost volumes, and non-booting recovery.

Recovery Performance and Real-World Expectations

Stellar can perform a technically thorough scan, but it cannot control the condition of the underlying data.

Scan ResultWhat it may mean
Original filename and folders appearFile-system metadata may still be intact
File appears only by typeStellar may have found it through a signature scan
Preview worksThe file has a stronger chance of usable recovery
Preview displays only a thumbnailThe full original may still be damaged or missing
File has the right name but will not openThe directory record survived while the content was overwritten
Recovered video stops halfwaySome fragments may be missing
File size is 0KBThe original content may no longer be accessible
Deep Scan finds more filesIt may also return more unnamed or reconstructed items

Large videos, databases, archives, disk images, and project files deserve extra checking. They can appear recoverable while containing internal damage.

Do not assume that a recovered ZIP archive is healthy until it extracts successfully. Do not approve a recovered video after playing only its opening seconds.

Is Stellar Data Recovery Safe?

The official Stellar software uses read-only scanning to inspect the source storage rather than intentionally changing it. The Mac Free page specifically describes the application as having read-only access without permission to modify the scanned data.

The larger risks come from how recovery is attempted.

For safer use:

  • Download Stellar from the official website.
  • Avoid cracked editions and unofficial activation keys.
  • Stop using the affected storage device.
  • Do not format or repair the drive before recovery.
  • Do not install Stellar on the source drive when avoidable.
  • Save recovered files to another healthy device.
  • Create an image before repeatedly scanning a questionable drive.
  • Stop when physical damage is suspected.

Stellar is a legitimate commercial product, but no software can make a physically unstable drive safe to scan repeatedly.

Which Stellar Plan Offers the Best Value?

Choose Free when:

You need a small number of documents or photographs, and every required file is below 100MB.

The Windows edition is especially useful when the total recovery remains under 1GB, or under 2GB after completing the sharing step.

Choose Standard when:

You have deleted or formatted files, but the drive and partition still appear normally.

Standard is $30 cheaper than Professional on an annual Windows license. That saving is worthwhile only when you are certain you do not need lost-partition search, disk imaging, or crashed-system recovery.

Choose Professional when:

The entire partition is missing, the computer does not boot, the drive may be failing, or you want to create a disk image before recovery.

For most serious recovery jobs, Professional offers the best value.

Choose Premium when:

You need to recover and repair damaged photographs or video.

The annual Premium plan is only $10 more than Professional on Windows. That makes it attractive for photographers and videographers, but not automatically necessary for everyone else.

Choose Technician or Toolkit when:

You are an IT professional, recovery service, business, or technician dealing with RAID arrays, NAS devices, Linux storage, and virtual-machine disks.

Home users should not buy these editions simply because their names sound more powerful.

Annual vs Lifetime Pricing

Stellar’s annual plans automatically renew unless the user cancels or changes the subscription to manual renewal.

The lifetime plans are one-time purchases, but Stellar’s licensing policy defines lifetime as 10 years of software use, with one year of complimentary support.

Windows Standard cost

Usage periodAnnual planLifetime license
One year$59.99$99
Two years$119.98$99
Three years$179.97$99

The Standard lifetime plan becomes cheaper during the second year.

Windows Professional cost

Usage periodAnnual planLifetime license
One year$89.99$149
Two years$179.98$149
Three years$269.97$149

Professional lifetime also becomes cheaper during the second year.

Windows Premium cost

Usage periodAnnual planLifetime license
One year$99.99$199
Two years$199.98$199
Three years$299.97$199

Premium lifetime becomes meaningfully cheaper from the third year.

For a single emergency, the annual license has the lower upfront cost. Lifetime makes sense when you expect repeated use on the licensed computer.

Refund Policy and Subscription Cancellation

Stellar provides a 30-day refund period for annual subscriptions and lifetime licenses. Monthly products receive seven days where applicable. The policy applies only to the first purchase, not renewal charges.

The guarantee has several exclusions.

A refund may be refused when:

  • The buyer did not evaluate the trial software first
  • The purchase came from another store or reseller
  • The request concerns a regional price difference
  • The request involves only one product from a bundle
  • The purchase was made through a special offer
  • The charge is a subscription renewal
  • The system does not meet the stated requirements
  • The customer refuses to work with technical support
  • Stellar provides a reasonable technical solution

This is not a simple no-questions-asked guarantee.

Annual subscriptions are on auto-renewal by default under Stellar’s general licensing terms. Users can manage or cancel renewal through their Stellar account. Support says renewal notices are sent before the upcoming charge.

Before paying:

  • Scan the entire device.
  • Preview several important files.
  • Confirm the required edition.
  • Check Windows versus Mac.
  • Review annual versus lifetime licensing.
  • Confirm whether the checkout is a special offer.
  • Check whether auto-renewal is enabled.
  • Save the purchase and cancellation emails.

Customer Support

Stellar provides 24×5 technical support with paid editions. Its support center includes account management, activation assistance, subscription cancellation, refunds, tickets, guides, videos, and a knowledge base.

This support is valuable when:

  • A drive does not appear in the application
  • A Deep Scan takes unusually long
  • The scan needs to be saved and resumed
  • A partition cannot be found
  • A bootable recovery drive is required
  • The recovered files will not open
  • The buyer purchased the wrong edition

Support cannot recreate overwritten files or fix severe physical damage through software.

Stellar vs EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard

  • Choose Stellar for a more useful immediate free allowance. Windows users receive 1GB before completing any sharing step, compared with EaseUS’s initial 500MB.
  • Choose EaseUS for a simpler paid-plan decision. EaseUS places most consumer recovery features into one Pro product, while Stellar separates partition recovery, imaging, and file repair across editions.
  • Choose Stellar Professional for disk imaging and drive monitoring. These features make it better suited to questionable drives and missing partitions.
  • Watch the free file-size limit. Stellar restricts each free file to 100MB, while EaseUS focuses mainly on the total recovery allowance.

Also Read: EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard Review: Is It Worth Paying For?

Stellar vs Disk Drill

  • Choose Stellar when free recovery matters. Its Windows allowance is far larger than Disk Drill’s 100MB.
  • Choose Disk Drill for flexible licensing. One PRO license covers Windows and macOS for one user across up to three activations.
  • Stellar sells Windows and Mac separately. Its Professional tier may still be appealing when you need crashed-system, optical-media, or media-repair features.
  • Disk Drill has a cleaner product lineup. Stellar provides more editions but requires more care when choosing between them.

Also Read: Disk Drill Review: Is the PRO Upgrade Worth It?

Stellar vs Wondershare Recoverit

  • Choose Recoverit for media-heavy and NAS workflows. Its higher plans strongly emphasise camera footage, fragmented video, photo enhancement, NAS, and Linux recovery.
  • Choose Stellar for a clearer entry price. Stellar Standard starts lower, and its Professional edition offers disk imaging and partition recovery without immediately moving into the highest plan.
  • Both place photo and video repair in higher tiers. These upgrades are useful for media professionals but unnecessary for normal document recovery.
  • Check renewal terms carefully. Annual Recoverit plans and Stellar subscriptions can renew automatically.

Stellar vs R-Studio

  • Choose R-Studio for technical control. It is better suited to IT professionals, RAID recovery, unusual file systems, disk imaging, and custom scan parameters.
  • Choose Stellar for ease of use. Its wizard requires fewer technical choices and is less intimidating during an urgent recovery.
  • R-Studio offers stronger permanent-license value. Its personal license starts at $79.99, close to Stellar Professional’s annual cost.
  • Stellar includes a broader support path for beginners. Its editions, guides, and support system are designed around assisted DIY recovery.

Stellar vs Recuva

  • Try Recuva first for a simple Windows deletion. Its Free edition may recover ordinary files without a volume allowance.
  • Choose Stellar for formatting, RAW drives, lost partitions, Mac storage, and crashed systems.
  • Recuva Professional is much cheaper. Its $24.95 price is easier to justify when the recovery need is basic.
  • Stellar is the more complete recovery family. Higher plans add disk imaging, media repair, optical recovery, RAID, NAS, and virtual-machine support.

Stellar vs TestDisk and PhotoRec

  • TestDisk and PhotoRec are free and open source. TestDisk focuses on partition and supported file-system recovery, while PhotoRec searches for file signatures. (CGSecurity)
  • Choose Stellar for a visual workflow. It provides previews, filters, file categories, scan management, and customer support.
  • PhotoRec often loses filenames and folders. It can recover files from severely damaged file systems, but the results require more manual sorting.
  • TestDisk requires careful decisions. It can alter partition information, making it less suitable for users who do not understand the recovery choices.

Frequently Asked Questions [FAQs]

Is Stellar Data Recovery legitimate?

Yes. Stellar Data Recovery is an established commercial recovery application for Windows and macOS. Download it from the official Stellar website rather than using unofficial installers or activation keys.

Is Stellar Data Recovery really free?

Yes, but the Free edition has limits. Windows users receive 1GB by default and can unlock another 1GB by sharing the software. Mac users receive 1GB. Individual recovered files cannot exceed 100MB.

Why can Stellar not recover a file larger than 100MB for free?

The Free edition applies a 100MB individual-file limit. Even when the total remaining allowance is larger, a single file above 100MB requires a paid edition.

Which Stellar Data Recovery edition should I buy?

Choose Standard for ordinary deletion and formatting. Choose Professional for lost partitions, crashed systems, disk imaging, and drive monitoring. Choose Premium when you also need photo and video repair.

How much does Stellar Data Recovery cost?

Windows Standard currently costs $59.99 per year or $99 lifetime. Professional costs $89.99 per year or $149 lifetime. Premium costs $99.99 per year or $199 lifetime.

Does Stellar automatically renew?

Stellar’s subscription products are placed on auto-renewal under its general licensing policy. Buyers can cancel or switch to manual renewal before the next charge.

Is the Stellar lifetime license really lifetime?

Stellar’s licensing policy defines a lifetime or perpetual license as ten years of use. It includes updates and upgrades for that term, with one year of complimentary support.

Can Stellar recover permanently deleted files?

It can recover permanently deleted files when their underlying data remains on the storage device. Files cannot be recovered after the content has been overwritten, securely erased, or cleared by SSD TRIM.

Can Stellar recover files after formatting?

Yes, Stellar can scan formatted storage. Recovery depends on the format type and whether new data was written to the device afterwards.

Can Stellar recover a lost partition?

Yes, but lost-partition recovery begins with Professional rather than Standard. The software can search for missing or deleted partitions and scan unallocated storage.

Can Stellar recover files from an SSD?

Stellar can scan SSDs, but TRIM may make deleted data unrecoverable. Stop using the SSD immediately and check available backups before continuing.

Can Stellar recover data from a damaged hard drive?

It may recover data from a logically damaged drive that remains stable and readable. A clicking, overheating, electrically damaged, or repeatedly disconnecting drive should be handled by a professional recovery service.

Is Stellar Standard enough?

Standard is enough for deleted files, formatted storage, memory cards, and RAW drives when the partition remains visible. It is not enough for lost partitions, crashed computers, or disk imaging.

Is Stellar Professional worth the extra money?

Professional is worth the upgrade when a partition is missing, the computer does not boot, or the drive should be imaged before recovery. These are significant additions rather than minor extras.

Is Stellar Premium worth buying?

Premium is worth buying for damaged photographs or videos that may require repair after recovery. It is unnecessary for most document, spreadsheet, PDF, and ordinary folder recovery.

Does Stellar offer refunds?

Stellar provides a 30-day refund period for annual and lifetime purchases, subject to its policy conditions. Renewals, special offers, reseller purchases, and buyers who did not evaluate the trial may not qualify.

Is Stellar better than EaseUS?

Stellar provides more clearly separated specialist editions and a larger immediate Windows-free allowance. EaseUS has a simpler paid product structure. The better choice is the one that previews the required files and includes the features needed for the specific recovery problem.

Is Stellar better than Disk Drill?

Stellar offers more free Windows recovery, while Disk Drill provides a more flexible cross-platform, three-device paid license. Stellar Professional has strong partition, crashed-system, imaging, and monitoring tools.

Is Stellar better than Recuva?

Stellar is better for formatted drives, lost partitions, Mac storage, disk images, non-booting systems, and media repair. Recuva is better for simple free Windows undelete work.

Is Stellar better than PhotoRec?

Stellar is easier to use and preserves filenames and folders when the file-system information remains available. PhotoRec is free and can work on heavily damaged file systems, but often loses the original names and directory structure.

Final Verdict: Is Stellar Data Recovery Worth It?

Stellar Data Recovery is worth considering when you want recovery software that is easier than R-Studio or TestDisk but can handle more than a basic Recuva-style deletion.

The Free edition is a useful starting point. Windows users can recover 1GB immediately and unlock another 1GB, although the 100MB individual-file cap limits its value for videos, RAW photos, archives, and large documents.

For paid recovery, Standard is suitable only for straightforward deletion, formatting, and RAW-drive cases. It becomes less attractive when the entire partition is missing, or the computer no longer starts.

Professional is the best choice for most serious recoveries. It adds lost-partition recovery, non-booting-system recovery, disk imaging, drive cloning, monitoring, and optical-media recovery on Windows.

Premium is worth the extra cost for photographers and videographers who may need to repair damaged media after recovering it. Everyone else can usually stay with Professional.

Stellar’s main weaknesses are its tiered product structure, automatic annual renewal, separate platform licenses, conditional refund policy, and a lifetime license that is officially defined as ten years.

Our recommendation is to scan the complete storage device using the Free or trial edition, preview several important files, and identify the recovery problem before choosing a plan. Do not buy Premium merely because it sounds better. Buy the lowest edition that contains the specific recovery feature you need.

Scores and Experience

Stellar Data Recovery
8 10 0 1
Stellar Data Recovery offers a reassuring recovery experience, especially for someone who has never used this type of software before. Its Free edition is genuinely useful for documents and smaller photos, while Professional adds the tools required for partitions, crashed systems, and safer disk-image recovery. The main frustration is the number of editions and the way essential features are split between them. Stellar is capable and approachable, but buyers need to study the plan table before paying.

Total Score iScores based on our tests
  • Ease of Use
    9/10 Amazing
The step-by-step interface makes it easy to choose file types, select a drive, scan, preview, and recover. It is far less intimidating than technical recovery software.
  • Recovery Coverage
    8/10 Very good
Stellar can scale from deleted files and formatting to partitions, non-booting systems, RAID, NAS, and virtual machines. The problem is that this coverage is divided across multiple editions.
  • Free Version
    7/10 Good
Windows users receive 1GB immediately and can unlock another 1GB by sharing. The 100MB individual-file limit prevents the free edition from being useful for most modern videos and large project files.
  • Disk Imaging and Drive Tools
    8/10 Very good
Professional includes disk imaging, drive cloning, health monitoring, and bad-sector awareness. These tools make Stellar more useful for serious recovery than a basic undelete application.
  • Pricing and Plan Selection
    7/10 Good
The starting price is reasonable, and Professional provides strong value. However, multiple editions, separate Mac and Windows licenses, auto-renewal, and the 10-year definition of lifetime make the licensing less straightforward.
  • Photo and Video Recovery
    8/10 Very good
Premium combines recovery with photo and video repair, which can be useful for photographers and videographers. Repair cannot recreate media that has already been overwritten.
  • Support and Refund Terms
    7/10 Good
Stellar offers 24×5 support and a 30-day refund window for annual and lifetime purchases. The policy contains several exclusions, including renewals, special offers, and cases where the trial was not properly evaluated.
