Ontrack EasyRecovery Review: Which Edition is Worth Buying?

Ontrack EasyRecovery comes from a company better known for professional data recovery laboratories than consumer software.

That background gives the product immediate credibility. Ontrack has handled failed hard drives, damaged servers, RAID systems, ransomware incidents, and physically broken storage for decades. EasyRecovery brings part of that knowledge into a do-it-yourself application for Windows and Mac users.

The software covers much more than accidental deletion. Depending on the edition, it can recover formatted storage, search for lost volumes, create disk images, monitor drive health, restore data from optical media, repair damaged photos and videos, clone drives, and reconstruct supported RAID configurations.

The plan structure is where things become difficult.

Ontrack offers Free, Home, Professional, Premium, Technician, and Toolkit editions. The Free edition recovers up to 1GB, but every individual file must be smaller than 25MB. Home covers basic recovery, Professional adds imaging and drive tools, Premium adds media repair and cloning, while Technician and Toolkit are meant for commercial and advanced recovery work.

Pricing is also less transparent than it should be. Ontrack’s public US EasyRecovery pages explain the plans but do not consistently display the checkout prices. Published US list prices have commonly started around $59.99 per year, but buyers need to confirm the exact amount, renewal setting, platform, and licence terms at checkout.

Quick Summary

Ontrack EasyRecovery is a capable recovery application with a straightforward interface and a sensible upgrade path. Its Free edition looks generous at 1GB, but the 25MB individual-file limit rules out most videos, RAW photographs, archives, and large project files. Professional is the strongest general-purpose edition, while Premium is mainly for photographers and videographers.

The Good

  • The recovery workflow is easy enough for first-time users.
  • Free users can recover up to 1GB of data.
  • Quick Scan and Deep Scan cover simple and more difficult recovery cases.
  • Scan results can be saved and resumed without scanning the drive again.
  • Professional includes disk imaging, optical-media recovery, and drive-health monitoring.
  • Premium adds photo repair, video repair, and drive cloning.
  • Technician supports commercial recovery and selected RAID configurations.
  • Windows and Mac versions support their major native file systems.
  • Ontrack can provide professional recovery services when software is no longer safe.
  • The product can preview supported files before the user pays or restores them.

The Bad

  • Free recovery is limited to files smaller than 25MB each.
  • The public US pages do not clearly display every current paid price.
  • Six editions make plan selection more complicated than necessary.
  • Paid licences generally expire after one year.
  • Windows and Mac versions are sold separately.
  • Home lacks the imaging tools that would make questionable-drive recovery safer.
  • Photo and video repair require Premium or a higher edition.
  • RAID and commercial-use rights require expensive professional editions.
  • Refund and cancellation terms are not presented as clearly as those of some competitors.
  • Parts of the public product information appear less current than Ontrack’s newer Windows recovery product.

What Is Ontrack EasyRecovery?

Ontrack EasyRecovery is data recovery software for Windows and macOS. It searches storage devices for files lost through deletion, formatting, damaged file systems, missing volumes, viruses, and other logical data-loss events.

It can work with internal hard drives, SSDs, external drives, USB flash drives, memory cards, optical discs, and supported disk images. Advanced editions expand its coverage to damaged media repair, drive cloning, unbootable systems, RAID arrays, virtual drives, and Linux-formatted storage.

The normal recovery process follows a familiar pattern:

  1. Choose the file types you want to recover.
  2. Select the original drive or location.
  3. Run a Quick Scan or Deep Scan.
  4. Preview the recoverable files.
  5. Select the files you need.
  6. Save them to another storage device.

EasyRecovery is not a physical drive-repair tool. It can recover data from logically damaged storage that remains readable, but it cannot replace failed components, repair damaged electronics, or safely work around severe mechanical failure.

A clicking or repeatedly disconnecting hard drive should not be placed under the stress of a long software scan.

How We Reviewed Ontrack EasyRecovery

This review is based on researched product analysis. TinyQuip has not claimed a controlled laboratory recovery test or assigned a recovery-success percentage.

We reviewed the current product descriptions, edition comparisons, free-version restrictions, licensing terms, Windows and Mac features, supported recovery scenarios, imaging tools, media-repair functions, RAID coverage, support options, and available pricing information.

We also compared EasyRecovery with EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard, Disk Drill, Stellar Data Recovery, Wondershare Recoverit, R-Studio, Recuva, TestDisk, and PhotoRec.

Recovery success depends on the storage device rather than the reputation of the software alone. The most important factors include:

  • Whether the deleted data has been overwritten
  • Whether an SSD has processed TRIM
  • Whether the original file-system records remain
  • Whether the files were fragmented
  • Whether the drive has bad sectors or physical damage
  • How much the device was used after the loss
  • Whether the correct encryption credentials are available

For that reason, the best evaluation is to scan the affected device and preview the files that actually matter.

What Can Ontrack EasyRecovery Recover?

Recently deleted files

EasyRecovery can search for files deleted from ordinary folders, the Windows Recycle Bin, macOS Trash, external drives, and removable storage.

Recovery is most promising when the deletion happened recently, and the device was stopped immediately. New files, updates, downloads, and normal background activity can overwrite deleted content.

A Quick Scan should normally be the first attempt. It is faster and has a better chance of preserving original filenames, folders, dates, and other metadata.

Formatted drives and memory cards

EasyRecovery can search formatted internal drives, external storage, USB devices, and memory cards.

A quick format may replace the file-system structure without immediately overwriting every file. Deep Scan can then search the storage for remaining records and recognisable file signatures.

The files may return without their original names or folder structure when the old directory information is gone.

RAW, corrupt, and inaccessible volumes

A damaged Windows partition may appear as RAW or prompt the user to format it before access.

Do not accept that formatting request when important data remains on the drive.

EasyRecovery can search for data on corrupt, damaged, deleted, and reformatted volumes. Windows recovery covers common FAT, exFAT, and NTFS storage, while the Mac edition supports Apple-oriented recovery from HFS, HFS+, and APFS drives.

Lost or deleted volumes

Paid editions can search for inaccessible, lost, or deleted volumes.

This can help after accidental partition deletion, failed resizing, operating-system installation, damaged partition information, or incorrect disk-management changes.

EasyRecovery is primarily designed to extract files safely rather than encourage users to repair the damaged partition in place.

The Home edition is marketed for recovering files from virus-infected drives.

That does not mean the software removes malware or decrypts every ransomware-encrypted file. It may recover deleted, hidden, corrupted, or inaccessible information when the original content remains readable.

An infected drive should be scanned from a clean computer, and recovered files should be checked before opening.

Memory cards and camera storage

EasyRecovery can scan SD cards, USB flash drives, camera storage, and other removable media.

It is suitable for ordinary photo and video deletion, accidental formatting, and logical card corruption. Ontrack also offers a separate EasyRecovery Photo product for buyers focused specifically on camera and media recovery.

A dedicated card reader is preferable to scanning through the camera itself. It keeps the card separate and reduces the chance that the camera will create new files.

Optical discs

Professional and higher editions can recover files from CDs and DVDs.

This is a less common feature among modern recovery tools and may be useful for old photo archives, documents, recorded media, and historical backups.

Recovery depends on whether the disc remains readable. Software cannot recreate sections where the physical recording layer has been destroyed.

Time Machine storage

The Mac Professional, Premium, and Technician editions can scan supported Time Machine backup drives.

This allows specific deleted or inaccessible files to be extracted without restoring the entire backup. Before buying recovery software, Mac users should still check Time Machine normally, along with iCloud and application-specific backups.

Crashed or non-booting systems

Advanced editions can create recovery media for systems that no longer start normally.

The bootable environment allows the software to access storage without loading the damaged operating system. This can help after system-file corruption, failed updates, boot errors, or accidental changes to the startup volume.

It cannot overcome a physically failed internal drive.

When Ontrack EasyRecovery Probably Cannot Help

The original data has been overwritten

A scan may find an old filename even when the blocks containing the file have already been reused.

The recovered file may then:

  • Refuse to open
  • Contain unrelated information
  • Display only part of an image
  • Stop halfway through a video
  • Fail checksum or extraction tests
  • Return as an empty file

No paid edition can reverse complete overwriting.

SSD TRIM has cleared the deleted blocks

EasyRecovery supports SSD scanning, but SSD support is not a recovery guarantee.

TRIM allows an operating system to tell an SSD that deleted blocks are no longer required. The drive may then clear those blocks internally. Once this happens, consumer recovery software cannot rebuild the original data.

Stop using an affected SSD immediately and check cloud storage, File History, Time Machine, previous versions, and application backups.

The drive has physical damage

Stop software recovery when a drive:

  • Clicks or grinds
  • Repeatedly starts and stops
  • Becomes unusually hot
  • Produces a burning smell
  • Disconnects during every scan
  • Freezes the computer when connected
  • Has been exposed to water, fire, or impact
  • Has a visibly damaged connector

Ontrack’s main advantage in this situation is not the software. It is the company’s professional recovery service.

The data was securely erased

Secure erasure deliberately overwrites information or destroys the encryption keys required to read it.

EasyRecovery cannot restore data that has been properly overwritten or cryptographically erased.

Encryption credentials are missing

EasyRecovery can work with supported encrypted storage, including applicable BitLocker recovery scenarios. The correct password or recovery key may still be required.

Recovery software does not bypass properly implemented encryption.

Interface and Recovery Experience

EasyRecovery is designed around a guided wizard rather than a technical disk-management screen.

The first step asks which data types should be included. Users can search for everything or narrow the scan to documents, emails, photos, audio, video, and other categories.

The next step asks where the data was lost. Depending on the edition and platform, this may include:

  • A connected drive
  • A partition
  • A folder
  • The desktop
  • Recycle Bin or Trash
  • External storage
  • A disk image
  • A lost volume
  • Optical media

The results can be organised using a folder tree, file-type view, and deleted-file list. Previewing helps the user confirm whether a file appears usable before recovery.

Scans can be paused, saved, and resumed. This is useful for large drives because a Deep Scan may take hours, and repeating it wastes time while placing additional load on the source device.

The interface is easier than R-Studio, TestDisk, and PhotoRec. It is broadly similar to Stellar because the two products share a comparable wizard-style approach and overlapping feature structure.

Quick Scan vs Deep Scan

Quick Scan

Quick Scan checks surviving file-system records and is best for recent deletions.

It normally produces cleaner results with:

  • Original filenames
  • Original folders
  • File dates
  • Faster scan times
  • Less reconstructed clutter

Start here when a file was deleted from an otherwise healthy drive.

Deep Scan

Deep Scan searches the device more thoroughly and can identify files by their internal signatures.

It is useful after:

  • Formatting
  • File-system corruption
  • A missing volume
  • An unsuccessful Quick Scan
  • Older deletion
  • Lost directory records

Deep Scan may find more data, but the results can be harder to organise. Files recovered through signatures may lose their original names, folders, and dates.

An advertised “up to 100%” recovery statement should not be interpreted as a guarantee. Deep Scan can only recover data that still exists.

Previewing Recoverable Files

EasyRecovery allows supported files to be previewed before saving them.

A successful preview is useful evidence, but it should not be treated as proof that every part of the file remains intact.

Before paying, inspect several representative files:

  • A small document
  • A larger document
  • Multiple photographs
  • A video from beginning to end
  • An archive that can later be extracted
  • Files from different folders
  • Files found by both Quick Scan and Deep Scan

A video that plays for ten seconds may still be damaged later. A visible photo thumbnail may survive even when the original full-resolution image is corrupted.

Ontrack EasyRecovery Free Review

The Free edition can recover up to 1GB of data, but every file must be smaller than 25MB.

That restriction matters more than the total allowance.

File exampleCan Free recover it?
200KB Word documentYes, if recoverable
5MB PDFYes
12MB JPEG photoYes
24MB presentationYes
30MB RAW photographNo
80MB ZIP archiveNo
500MB videoNo

EasyRecovery Free is practical for office documents, PDFs, compressed photos, text files, and smaller email-related files.

It is much less useful for modern video, RAW camera files, large archives, databases, virtual disks, and creative project files.

Stellar’s Free edition uses a similar model with a higher individual-file ceiling, while Recuva Free does not publish an equivalent recovery-volume restriction.

Which EasyRecovery Edition Should You Buy?

Choose Free for small files

Free is suitable when the files are individually below 25MB, and the combined recovery stays within 1GB.

There is no reason to buy Home before completing a Free scan and checking whether the required files fit within the limit.

Choose Home for straightforward recovery

Home is aimed at ordinary users recovering:

  • Deleted photographs
  • Documents
  • Videos
  • Music
  • Formatted removable storage
  • Files affected by a virus
  • Data from working internal and external drives

Home is less compelling when the source drive is unstable because it lacks Professional’s disk-imaging tools.

Choose Professional for serious recovery

Professional is the strongest general recommendation in the EasyRecovery range.

It adds:

  • Disk-image creation
  • Recovery from saved images
  • S.M.A.R.T. drive monitoring
  • CD and DVD recovery
  • More advanced lost-volume workflows
  • Better tools for questionable or corrupted storage

A disk image allows the user to scan a copy rather than repeatedly accessing the original drive. That is a meaningful safety feature rather than a minor upgrade.

Choose Premium for damaged photos and videos

Premium includes everything in Professional and adds:

  • Corrupt photo repair
  • Corrupt video repair
  • Batch media-repair functions
  • HDD and SSD cloning

This edition makes sense for photographers, videographers, drone users, and people recovering large media libraries.

It is unnecessary when the recovery involves ordinary documents that open normally after restoration.

Choose Technician for commercial and RAID recovery

Technician is designed for IT providers and recovery professionals.

It adds:

  • Commercial recovery rights
  • Installation on multiple systems
  • Lost or formatted RAID recovery
  • RAID 0, 5, and 6 support on Windows
  • Virtual RAID creation on Windows

A normal business licence does not allow the software to be used as a paid recovery service for outside customers. Technician or Toolkit is required for that work.

Choose Toolkit for cross-platform professional work

Toolkit is the broadest package and is aimed at professional recovery environments.

It covers Windows, Mac, and Linux file systems, commercial use, RAID recovery, disk imaging, cloning, optical media, and multiple-system installation.

Home users should not buy Toolkit merely because it is the highest edition.

Disk Imaging and Drive Monitoring

Professional and higher editions can create disk images.

A disk image preserves the readable sectors of a storage device in another file. Future scans can then be performed on the image rather than the original drive.

This is useful when:

  • A drive has bad sectors
  • The scan may need to be repeated
  • The original device should remain untouched
  • The recovery is important enough to preserve a point-in-time copy
  • The drive reads slowly but remains stable

The destination must have enough capacity for the image. A 2TB drive can require close to 2TB of available destination space even when the visible files occupy much less.

Professional also includes S.M.A.R.T. monitoring. This can reveal reported bad sectors, temperature issues, and other drive-health indicators.

A healthy S.M.A.R.T. status does not guarantee that a drive will not fail. It should be treated as an early warning, not a substitute for backups.

Photo and Video Repair

Premium and higher editions can repair supported photos and videos.

Repair is different from recovery.

Recovery extracts whatever information remains on the storage device. Repair attempts to rebuild the structure of a file that was recovered but cannot open or play normally.

It may help with:

  • Damaged file headers
  • Broken video indexes
  • Incorrect container information
  • Blurry or pixelated images
  • Choppy or stuttering video
  • Some camera RAW corruption
  • Missing photo thumbnails

It cannot recreate footage, image sections, or file content that has been overwritten.

Always preserve the original recovered file before running a repair process.

RAID Recovery

Technician and Toolkit support recovery from selected RAID configurations.

The Windows Technician edition covers RAID 0, RAID 5, and RAID 6 and can create a virtual RAID when the original configuration is unavailable.

RAID recovery depends on more than choosing the correct RAID level. Important details can include:

  • Disk order
  • Stripe size
  • Parity rotation
  • Data offset
  • Missing member disks
  • File system
  • Controller metadata
  • Previous rebuild attempts

An incorrectly reconstructed array may display familiar filenames while returning corrupted content.

Image each member drive before experimenting with a valuable array. A physically failing or business-critical RAID is better handled by a specialist.

Is Ontrack EasyRecovery Safe?

EasyRecovery is legitimate software when downloaded from Ontrack.

The normal recovery process reads the affected storage and saves files elsewhere. The main risks come from installing or using it incorrectly.

For safer recovery:

  • Do not install the software on the affected drive.
  • Do not save recovered files back to the source.
  • Avoid formatting or repairing the drive before recovery.
  • Create an image when the drive is questionable but stable.
  • Stop scanning when physical damage is suspected.
  • Use the correct commercial licence when recovering customer devices.
  • Download only from the official Ontrack website or authorised reseller.

The licence terms also explain that Ontrack cannot guarantee recovery because the data may already be permanently corrupted or deleted before the software is used.

Ontrack processes account, contact, licensing, support, and product-related information under its privacy policy. The recovery itself is performed through the installed software unless the user separately chooses Ontrack’s remote or laboratory services.

Ontrack EasyRecovery Pricing

Ontrack’s public US EasyRecovery pages currently explain each edition but do not consistently show the checkout amounts. The following are the most commonly published US annual list prices for the existing EasyRecovery plan structure.

EditionUS PriceLicence typeBest for
Free$0LimitedUp to 1GB, with files below 25MB
HomeAround $59.99/yearOne workstationBasic deleted and formatted-file recovery
ProfessionalAround $99.99/yearOne workstationImaging, drive health, optical media, and serious recovery
PremiumAround $109.99/yearOne workstationProfessional features plus media repair and cloning
TechnicianAround $199.99/yearUp to three systemsCommercial and RAID recovery
ToolkitAround $299.99/yearUp to three systemsCross-platform professional recovery

These prices should be treated as reference figures, not a substitute for the final checkout. Ontrack may use regional pricing, reseller checkout pages, promotions, or revised product packaging.

A current Ontrack pricing complication

EasyRecovery Ontrack now also promotes Ontrack Desk, a newer Windows recovery product with a different structure:

Ontrack Desk planCurrent price
Free$0, up to 1GB
Home monthly$14.99/month
Home annual$79.99/year
Grow monthly$34.99/month
Grow annual$249.99/year

Ontrack Desk and Ontrack EasyRecovery are not the same product page or plan structure. Windows buyers should confirm exactly which application they are downloading and purchasing.

Is Ontrack EasyRecovery Good Value?

The Free edition offers reasonable value for small files, but its 25MB limit is restrictive.

Home is harder to recommend when Recuva offers unrestricted basic Windows recovery for free, and EaseUS provides a short-term one-month option.

Professional is the strongest EasyRecovery plan because disk imaging and drive monitoring materially improve the recovery process. If an annual Professional licence is close to $100, however, R-Studio’s $79.99 permanent licence becomes a serious alternative for technical users.

Premium can provide good value for media professionals, particularly when damaged files need repair. Recoverit Premium and Stellar Premium compete directly in this area and may offer clearer checkout pricing.

Technician and Toolkit should be judged as business tools rather than consumer purchases. Their commercial licensing and RAID support matter more than the recovery needs of one home computer.

Subscription, Renewal, and Licensing

EasyRecovery paid licences generally run for one year from purchase or activation.

The licence expires when the term ends unless it is renewed. Renewal behaviour may depend on the reseller and checkout configuration, so buyers should check whether automatic renewal is enabled.

Home, Professional, and Premium are normally intended for one workstation and for the buyer’s own personal or internal business use.

They do not allow a repair shop, freelancer, or managed service provider to charge customers for recovery work. Technician or Toolkit is required for commercial service-provider use.

Before paying, confirm:

  • Windows or Mac
  • The exact edition
  • Number of licensed computers
  • One-year term
  • Renewal setting
  • Final tax and price
  • Commercial-use rights
  • Refund and cancellation conditions

Refund and Cancellation Terms

Ontrack does not present a broad, simple money-back guarantee prominently on the EasyRecovery product page.

The licence terms direct buyers to the authorised reseller’s cancellation conditions and applicable consumer law. This means refund rights can depend on the checkout provider, country, purchase method, and whether the software has already been downloaded or activated.

Do not buy first and assume that an unsuccessful recovery will automatically qualify for a refund.

Complete the Free scan, preview the important files, and check the refund wording shown during checkout.

Customer Support and Professional Recovery

EasyRecovery support is available through Ontrack’s technical support channel and product guides.

Support can help with:

  • Download and activation issues
  • Missing drives
  • Scan problems
  • Edition selection
  • Saved scan results
  • Disk images
  • Bootable recovery
  • Media repair
  • RAID configuration
  • Licence errors

The larger advantage is Ontrack’s professional recovery service.

When a drive is physically damaged, or the recovery is too complex for software, the same company offers remote and laboratory recovery. That creates a clearer escalation path than products sold only as downloadable software.

It does not mean a paid EasyRecovery licence includes laboratory recovery. Professional services are separate and can cost substantially more.

The Free edition can recover up to 1GB. However, every individual file must be smaller than 25MB.

Can EasyRecovery recover a 100MB video for free?

No. The file exceeds the 25MB individual-file limit even when the total 1GB allowance has not been used.

Which Ontrack EasyRecovery edition should I buy?

Choose Home for basic recovery, Professional for disk imaging and drive tools, Premium for media repair, Technician for commercial and RAID work, and Toolkit for cross-platform professional recovery.

How much does Ontrack EasyRecovery cost?

Published US list pricing commonly starts around $59.99 per year for Home. Professional, Premium, Technician, and Toolkit have commonly been listed around $99.99, $109.99, $199.99, and $299.99 per year. Verify the final checkout because Ontrack does not currently show every US price clearly on its main product pages.

Is Ontrack EasyRecovery a subscription?

Paid EasyRecovery licences generally run for one year. The software licence expires if it is not renewed.

Does EasyRecovery automatically renew?

Renewal behaviour can depend on the reseller and checkout configuration. Check whether automatic renewal is enabled before completing the purchase.

Does Ontrack EasyRecovery offer refunds?

Refund and cancellation rights depend on the authorised reseller’s terms and applicable consumer law. Ontrack does not prominently advertise a universal no-questions-asked guarantee for EasyRecovery.

Can EasyRecovery recover permanently deleted files?

It can recover some permanently deleted files when their underlying data has not been overwritten, securely erased, or cleared by SSD TRIM.

Can EasyRecovery recover files after formatting?

Yes. Quick-format and logically damaged storage may still contain recoverable information. Recovery becomes less likely after the device has been reused.

Can EasyRecovery recover data from an SSD?

The software can scan SSDs, but deleted files may be unrecoverable after TRIM clears the relevant blocks.

Can EasyRecovery recover a lost partition?

Paid editions can search for lost, deleted, and inaccessible volumes. Results depend on the remaining partition and file-system information.

Can EasyRecovery recover a physically damaged hard drive?

Software should not be the first option for a clicking, overheating, or repeatedly disconnecting drive. Ontrack provides separate professional recovery services for physical damage.

Can EasyRecovery repair corrupted photos and videos?

Premium and higher editions include photo and video repair. Repair can fix some structural damage but cannot recreate overwritten content.

Does EasyRecovery support RAID?

Technician and Toolkit support selected RAID recovery. The Windows Technician edition includes RAID 0, 5, and 6 recovery and virtual RAID construction.

Does EasyRecovery work on Mac?

Yes. A separate Mac edition supports APFS, HFS, HFS+, FAT, exFAT, and connected NTFS storage. Confirm compatibility with the exact macOS version before purchasing.

Can EasyRecovery recover Time Machine files?

Mac Professional, Premium, and Technician can scan supported Time Machine backup drives and recover selected files.

Does EasyRecovery work on Linux?

EasyRecovery does not have an ordinary consumer Linux desktop edition. Toolkit supports recovery from applicable Linux file systems as part of its professional cross-platform coverage.

Can EasyRecovery create a disk image?

Professional and higher editions can create disk images. Scanning an image can reduce repeated access to the original drive.

Should I install EasyRecovery on the affected drive?

No. Installing software may overwrite deleted data. Use another drive or computer and save the recovered files to separate storage.

Is Ontrack EasyRecovery better than Recuva?

EasyRecovery is broader and supports Mac, imaging, media repair, optical discs, lost volumes, and RAID. Recuva is better for basic free Windows recovery.

Is Ontrack EasyRecovery better than R-Studio?

EasyRecovery is easier for beginners. R-Studio provides deeper technical control, a permanent licence, and stronger advanced recovery value.

What is the difference between EasyRecovery and Ontrack Desk?

They are separate Ontrack recovery products with different plan structures. Ontrack Desk is promoted as a newer Windows recovery application with Free, Home, and Grow plans, while EasyRecovery retains its Free-to-Toolkit edition structure.

Final Verdict: Is Ontrack EasyRecovery Worth It?

Ontrack EasyRecovery is worth considering when you want guided recovery software backed by a company that can also handle complex physical and professional recovery cases.

The Free edition is useful, but only for smaller files. Its 1GB allowance cannot help when the individual file exceeds 25MB, which excludes many videos, RAW photos, archives, and project files.

For paid recovery, Home is suitable for basic deletion and formatting. It is harder to justify when Recuva Free already handles the job.

Professional is the best EasyRecovery edition for most serious users. Disk imaging, drive-health monitoring, optical recovery, and advanced volume tools provide practical value.

Premium makes sense for media recovery. Its photo and video repair tools are useful when recovered files remain damaged.

Technician and Toolkit are business products. Their commercial licensing, multiple-system coverage, RAID support, and cross-platform tools are unnecessary for most home users.

The biggest weakness is the purchase experience. Ontrack’s current public EasyRecovery pages explain the features but do not provide the pricing clarity buyers need. The company also promotes Ontrack Desk as a newer Windows recovery product, creating another decision before checkout.

Our recommendation is to complete the Free scan first, preview several important files, and identify the lowest edition containing the exact feature you need. Verify the final price, platform, one-year term, renewal setting, and refund conditions before paying.

Scores and Experience

Ontrack EasyRecovery
7 10 0 1
Ontrack EasyRecovery combines an approachable recovery wizard with features that can scale into disk imaging, media repair, RAID recovery, and commercial use. The actual recovery experience is well structured, particularly for users who want something easier than R-Studio or TestDisk. Its Free edition is held back by the 25MB file limit, and the current product, pricing, and licence presentation feels less clear than it should. EasyRecovery remains capable, but plan selection requires more research than the interface itself.

Total Score iScores based on our tests
  • Ease of Use
    8/10 Very good
The wizard makes selecting file types, storage locations, scan modes, and recovery destinations straightforward. Saved scans and previews reduce the need to repeat time-consuming work.
  • Recovery Coverage
    8/10 Very good
EasyRecovery covers deletion, formatting, corrupt volumes, lost partitions, optical media, disk images, damaged media files, and supported RAID configurations. Many of these features require higher editions.
  • Free Version
    6/10 Normal
The 1GB allowance looks good until the 25MB individual-file limit is considered. It works well for documents and smaller photos but excludes most video, RAW media, and large archives.
  • Imaging and Advanced Tools
    8/10 Very good
Professional adds genuinely useful disk imaging, health monitoring, and optical recovery. Premium and Technician expand the product meaningfully rather than adding only minor conveniences.
  • Pricing and Plan Clarity
    5/10 Neutral
The product has too many editions, and current US checkout prices are not displayed clearly on the main EasyRecovery pages. The coexistence of EasyRecovery and Ontrack Desk makes the buying process even less obvious.
  • Support and Professional Escalation
    9/10 Amazing
Ontrack offers technical support and a direct path to remote or laboratory recovery. That is valuable when a recovery grows beyond what consumer software can safely handle.
