Recuva Review: Is the Free Version All You Need?

Most data recovery software lets you scan for free and then asks for payment before it restores anything useful.

Recuva takes a different approach.

Its Free edition can recover an unlimited amount of data without imposing a 100MB, 500MB, 1GB, or 2GB recovery allowance. It includes the same core “Advanced file recovery” feature listed for Recuva Professional, along with normal scans, Deep Scan, formatted-drive recovery, file previews, recoverability estimates, and secure overwrite. Recuva Professional mainly adds virtual hard drive support, automatic updates, and priority support.

That makes Recuva one of the easiest products in this comparison to recommend trying. There is little reason to enter payment details before seeing whether the Free edition can recover the files.

However, Recuva is also narrower than EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard, Disk Drill, Stellar Data Recovery, Wondershare Recoverit, and R-Studio. It is available only for Windows, lacks dedicated RAID and NAS recovery, does not offer bootable crashed-computer recovery, and has no integrated photo or video repair. It is better at ordinary file undelete work than complicated storage reconstruction.

Recuva Professional currently costs $24.95 on the US product page. That is considerably cheaper than most paid recovery software, but the upgrade does not give Recuva a stronger general recovery engine. It mainly pays for support, automatic updates, and virtual hard disk features.

So, should you pay for Recuva?

For most home users, Recuva Free should be the first choice. Upgrade only when you need virtual hard drive recovery or want direct priority support.

Quick Verdict

Recuva is one of the best first tools for a simple Windows file deletion because the Free edition can complete the recovery rather than merely previewing it. It is fast, lightweight, and easy to understand. Its limitations become clear when the problem involves Mac storage, a missing partition, RAID, a non-booting computer, damaged video, or a physically unstable drive.

What Is Recuva?

Recuva is Windows data recovery software developed under the CCleaner brand, now part of Gen Digital. It is designed primarily to find and restore deleted files from storage that Windows can access.

It can recover files from locations such as:

  • Internal hard drives
  • External hard drives
  • USB flash drives
  • Memory cards
  • Digital camera storage
  • Portable music players
  • Windows Recycle Bin
  • Rewritable storage recognised by Windows

Recuva supports ordinary deleted-file recovery, deeper signature searches, scanning of newly formatted or logically damaged drives, image previews, recoverability estimates, and secure deletion. The Professional edition adds support for virtual hard disk images, automatic software updates, and priority support. c

The application is an undelete and logical recovery tool rather than a complete professional recovery environment.

That distinction matters.

Recuva is a sensible choice when a file was deleted from a working drive and may also help after a quick format or certain file-system problems. It is not designed to replace R-Studio’s RAID reconstruction, Disk Drill’s broader imaging and camera tools, Stellar’s bootable recovery, or Recoverit’s media-repair features.

It also cannot physically repair a drive. A hard drive that clicks, overheats, repeatedly disconnects, or has suffered electrical damage should not be pushed through repeated Recuva scans.

How We Reviewed Recuva

This review is based on researched analysis rather than a claimed laboratory recovery test.

We examined Recuva’s current product pages, official support documentation, Free and Professional feature comparison, current pricing, scanning methods, Advanced Mode, recovery-condition indicators, formatted-drive guidance, secure overwrite rules, refund policy, privacy disclosures, system requirements, and recent release history.

For this review, we also compared it with:

  • EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard
  • Disk Drill
  • Stellar Data Recovery
  • Wondershare Recoverit
  • R-Studio
  • Ontrack EasyRecovery
  • TestDisk
  • PhotoRec

We have not assigned Recuva a universal recovery-success percentage. Recovery results depend on the condition of the individual file and device.

Important factors include:

  • Whether the deleted file has been overwritten
  • Whether the drive uses NTFS, FAT, or another supported file system
  • Whether the file was fragmented
  • How long the drive was used after deletion
  • Whether an SSD processed TRIM
  • Whether the file-system entry still exists
  • Whether the storage has unreadable sectors
  • Whether the file was securely erased

Recuva’s own documentation states that it cannot guarantee recovery of a particular file and recommends opening recovered files in their original applications to confirm that they remain usable.

What Can Recuva Recover?

Recuva works best when the storage device remains healthy, and Windows can still recognise it.

Accidentally deleted files

A normal file deletion is Recuva’s strongest use case.

When a user empties the Recycle Bin or permanently deletes a file, Windows normally marks the storage space as available. The original content may remain until another file is written over the same location.

Recuva can inspect the remaining file-system records and display deleted files that may still be recoverable.

The chance of success is usually strongest when:

  • The deletion happened recently
  • The computer was stopped quickly
  • The file was stored on a traditional hard drive
  • The file was not heavily fragmented
  • Little new data was written afterwards
  • The original file-system record remains intact

Do not continue downloading, installing applications, editing files, or installing Windows updates on the affected drive. These activities can overwrite deleted data.

Files removed from the Recycle Bin

Recuva can search for files after the Windows Recycle Bin has been emptied.

A quick scan should be the first attempt. It can find deleted entries while retaining useful information such as the original filename, location, size, and timestamps.

The fact that a file appears in the results does not prove that its content remains intact. Recuva may find the old file record even when some of the original storage blocks have been replaced.

USB flash drive recovery

Recuva is a useful first option for recovering deleted data from a USB flash drive.

It can scan USB storage connected to the Windows computer and search for documents, photographs, video, audio, archives, and other supported data. Recuva’s official product page includes USB sticks among its supported rewritable media.

Recovery may be possible after:

  • Accidental deletion
  • An emptied folder
  • A quick format
  • Certain file-system errors
  • Improper removal
  • A drive that appears empty

Do not copy Recuva or the recovered files onto the same USB drive.

SD-card and camera recovery

Recuva supports memory cards and digital camera storage that can be presented to Windows as a readable drive.

This can help after:

  • Deleting photographs in the camera
  • Formatting an SD or microSD card
  • Removing files through Windows
  • A card becoming logically damaged
  • Accidentally clearing a camera folder

Remove the card from the camera and stop using it. Cameras can create new folders, thumbnails, databases, and media files simply by being switched on.

Recuva does not have Recoverit’s enhanced fragmented-video reconstruction or Disk Drill’s dedicated Advanced Camera Recovery module. It is better suited to ordinary photos and files than difficult, fragmented professional footage

Newly formatted drives

CCleaner says Recuva can scan newly formatted drives and logically damaged disks. The user must enable the option to scan for non-deleted files when attempting this type of recovery.

A quick format may replace file-system structures without immediately overwriting every data block. Recuva may therefore find:

  • Old file records
  • Existing non-deleted data
  • Recognisable file signatures
  • Files grouped by their format

The original folder structure may be incomplete or missing. A drive that was formatted and then reused presents a much lower recovery chance.

Logically damaged drives

Recuva can scan certain drives damaged by software or file-system problems. Its documentation describes enabling Scan for non-deleted files for damaged or reformatted storage.

This may help when:

  • A drive appears empty
  • The file system is partly corrupt
  • Files disappeared without being deliberately deleted
  • Windows still assigns the drive a letter
  • A format or repair operation damaged directory information

Do not confuse logical damage with physical failure. Although the official support wording refers broadly to damaged disks, a clicking or unstable hard drive should be handled with much greater care.

Emails

Recuva’s product page lists emails among the file categories it can recover.

The result depends on how the email application stores its data. An email may be part of a larger mailbox database rather than an individual standalone file.

Recovering a damaged mailbox file does not guarantee that the email application can open or import it. Recuva also states that recovered email entries cannot be securely overwritten directly from its result window.

When Recuva Probably Cannot Recover Your Files

The absence of a recovery-volume limit does not mean Recuva can recover every deleted file.

The file has been overwritten

This is the most important limitation.

Windows can retain the old filename and directory entry after the underlying content has been overwritten. Recuva may therefore display a file with:

  • Its original name
  • The expected size
  • The previous path
  • The correct date
  • A positive-looking recovery status

The restored file may still refuse to open.

Recuva’s documentation warns that recovered files can remain unusable when they were partially or fully overwritten or otherwise damaged.

The SSD has processed TRIM

Recuva runs on Windows and can scan storage visible to the operating system, including SSDs. That does not mean deleted SSD files remain recoverable.

TRIM allows Windows to tell an SSD that deleted blocks are no longer needed. The drive can then clear or recycle them internally.

Once this happens, Recuva may still see a file record while the original data has already disappeared.

The practical advice is simple:

  • Stop using the SSD immediately.
  • Check OneDrive and other cloud services.
  • Check Windows File History.
  • Check application backups and version history.
  • Do not install Recuva on the affected SSD.
  • Do not assume Deep Scan can reverse TRIM.

Recuva’s secure overwrite should also not be used on SSDs. CCleaner says the process may be ineffective and could damage the drive through unnecessary writes.

A FAT file was fragmented

Recuva’s documentation says fragmented files are more difficult to recover and states that fragmented files cannot be recovered from a FAT-formatted drive through its normal recovery process. NTFS recovery is generally more favourable.

This matters for memory cards and smaller USB drives, which commonly use FAT-based file systems.

A large camera video may be split across several non-contiguous storage areas. Recuva may find the beginning without correctly reconstructing every fragment.

The drive is physically failing

Stop using Recuva when a drive:

  • Clicks or grinds
  • Repeatedly spins up and stops
  • Becomes unusually hot
  • Produces a burning smell
  • Disconnects during every scan
  • Freezes Windows when connected
  • Was exposed to water or fire
  • Has a broken connector
  • Is inconsistently detected

A long Deep Scan forces the drive to read large amounts of storage. That is not a harmless test on unstable hardware.

Professional recovery services use specialised imaging hardware that can control retries, timeouts, read direction, and power cycles. Recuva does not replace that equipment.

The file was securely erased

Recuva cannot normally restore a file after it has been securely overwritten. Its FAQ states that securely deleted files are typically gone permanently.

A deleted file may still appear in the results because the filename or MFT record survives, but the recovered content may contain gibberish rather than the original information.

The Mac drive uses APFS or HFS+

Recuva does not run on macOS and is not designed as a general Mac file-system recovery tool.

A Mac-formatted APFS or HFS+ drive should be scanned with a tool that explicitly supports those file systems, such as Disk Drill, EaseUS for Mac, Stellar for Mac, Recoverit for Mac, R-Studio, or PhotoRec in an appropriate workflow.

The missing data is inside a complex RAID

Recuva may scan a RAID volume if Windows already presents it as a normal working drive. It does not provide R-Studio-style virtual RAID reconstruction, stripe configuration, parity analysis, or missing-member simulation.

Do not use Recuva as the main solution when the RAID itself has failed.

Installing Recuva Without Overwriting Your Files

Recovery software must read from the affected drive, but installing it also writes new data.

That creates a basic conflict: installing Recuva on the same drive may overwrite the files you are trying to restore.

When recovering an external drive, USB device, or memory card, install Recuva on the computer’s internal drive. That keeps the installation separate from the source.

When recovering files from the computer’s main Windows drive, the safer process is:

  1. Stop using the computer.
  2. Shut it down.
  3. Connect the affected drive to another Windows computer when practical.
  4. Install Recuva on the healthy computer.
  5. Scan the affected drive as secondary storage.
  6. Recover the files to a separate destination.

Recuva explicitly recommends saving recovered files to another drive so it does not overwrite the data it is attempting to recover.

Recuva Wizard and Advanced Mode

The tool offers two interfaces.

The Wizard is intended for beginners. Advanced Mode gives the user more direct search and result controls.

Recuva Wizard

The Wizard walks the user through the main choices without exposing every setting at once.

It asks what type of file is missing and where it was stored. The user can then start the search or enable Deep Scan when the initial attempt fails.

The Wizard is useful when:

  • The deletion was recent
  • You know the file type
  • You know the original location
  • The drive is healthy
  • You want the fastest starting point

It keeps the process simple, but it can also hide useful filtering and result information.

Advanced Mode

Advanced Mode allows the user to select a drive, enter a folder path or filename, restrict the scan to certain file types, and switch between list, tree, and thumbnail views.

It also displays:

  • File path
  • Size
  • Creation date
  • Modification date
  • Access date
  • Recovery state
  • Image preview
  • File-header information
  • Original folder layout where available

Recuva uses coloured indicators to estimate the likelihood of recovery:

  • Green: Excellent
  • Orange: Acceptable
  • Red: Unlikely

These indicators are estimates, not guarantees. A green file may still contain unnoticed corruption, particularly when it is large or fragmented.

Advanced Mode is better when a scan returns many results or when the user wants to search for a specific extension, folder, filename, or path.

Quick Scan vs Deep Scan

Recuva performs more than a single type of search.

Quick Scan

The normal scan focuses on existing file-system information and deleted entries.

It is the best first step for:

  • A recently deleted file
  • An emptied Recycle Bin
  • A healthy NTFS drive
  • A known folder or filename
  • An ordinary USB deletion

Quick Scan is faster and has a better chance of retaining original filenames, paths, dates, and folder structure because it relies on surviving metadata.

Deep Scan

Deep Scan searches the storage more thoroughly for traces of deleted files. Recuva describes it as an advanced mode for files that are difficult to find, while its support documentation warns that the scan may take hours.

Use Deep Scan when:

  • The normal scan found nothing
  • The drive was formatted
  • File-system information is damaged
  • The original directory entry is gone
  • You are searching for an older deletion

Deep Scan can recover files through recognised signatures, but that comes with trade-offs.

The result may lose:

  • Original filenames
  • Original folders
  • Creation dates
  • File relationships
  • Application metadata

Deep Scan is not automatically better than Quick Scan. It is broader, slower, and can produce less organised results.

Understanding Recuva’s Recovery Results

Recuva’s result screen is more useful than its dated design first suggests.

List View

List View displays files with their location, modification date, size, and estimated recovery condition.

It is useful when you know the filename or want to sort through a large set of deleted entries.

Tree View

Tree View arranges recoverable files under their original folders and drives when enough directory information survives.

This is useful for restoring a project or folder rather than individual files.

Recuva can attempt to restore the original folder structure through its recovery options.

Thumbnail View

Thumbnail View displays small previews for recoverable images where possible.

A missing thumbnail can mean the file is damaged, although it may also reflect an unsupported preview format. A visible thumbnail does not always prove that the complete high-resolution original remains intact.

Preview Pane

The Preview pane can display supported images before recovery.

Use it to check multiple files rather than relying on the colour indicator alone.

Info and Header Panes

The Info pane displays metadata and recovery status. The Header pane shows the beginning of the file in hexadecimal and ASCII form.

Header information is more useful to technical users. It can help confirm whether the file begins with the expected format signature, but it does not prove that the remainder is healthy.

NAS devicesNo dedicated remote NAS recovery module
Mac internal drivesNot supported as a native Mac recovery product
Android internal storageNo official Android Recuva application
iPhone and iPadNo dedicated iOS recovery support
Optical mediaNot one of Recuva’s main supported recovery categories

Recuva’s official product and privacy pages list internal Windows storage, Recycle Bin, memory cards, USB drives, external hard drives, cameras, and music players among its main recovery scenarios.

Supported File Systems

Recuva is centred on storage commonly used with Windows.

Its established support covers:

  • NTFS
  • FAT12
  • FAT16
  • FAT32
  • exFAT

Recuva has also added recovery support for Ext2, Ext3, and Ext4 storage in past releases, although it remains a Windows application rather than a Linux desktop recovery suite.

Its strongest recovery results are generally associated with NTFS because NTFS retains richer file-system records and can provide more information about fragmented files. Recuva’s own FAQ states that recovery from NTFS is easier than from FAT and that fragmented FAT files cannot be reconstructed through its normal recovery process.

Recuva is not the right choice for:

  • APFS
  • HFS+
  • Btrfs
  • XFS
  • UFS
  • ReFS-heavy professional recovery
  • Complex cross-platform storage layouts

R-Studio, Disk Drill, PhotoRec, and specialist tools provide broader file-system coverage.

Supported File Types

Recuva can search for photographs, music, documents, video, email, and other data stored on supported media.

Its scanning workflow includes categories for common formats such as:

CategoryExamples
PicturesJPEG, PNG, GIF, TIFF, BMP and other recognised images
DocumentsMicrosoft Office files, PDFs, text files, and related documents
VideoCommon video containers and recordings
Music and audioMP3 and other supported audio formats
EmailsSupported mailbox and email-related files
ArchivesZIP and other recognised archive formats
Other filesFiles not covered by a narrower Wizard category

Deep Scan does not understand every proprietary format in existence. When a rare file type is not included among the signatures Recuva recognises, the original file-system record may be the only route to recovery.

Current public priceFree$24.95

CCleaner’s current comparison table lists Advanced file recovery for Free and Professional. The paid version adds virtual hard drive support, automatic updates, and premium or priority support.

This means paying does not automatically make an ordinary deleted file more recoverable.

A file that Recuva Free cannot restore because it was overwritten will not become recoverable merely because a Professional key was entered.

Choose Recuva Free when:

  • You are recovering ordinary Windows files.
  • The drive is directly connected.
  • You do not need VHD support.
  • You are comfortable using the documentation.
  • You do not require priority support.
  • You can update the program manually.

Choose Recuva Professional when:

  • You need to create, mount, or recover from VHD images.
  • You want automatic updates.
  • You want priority technical support.
  • You prefer supporting the continued development of the product.
  • The $24.95 price is acceptable even though normal recovery remains similar.

For most individual recoveries, the Free edition is enough.

Virtual Hard Drive Support

Virtual hard drive support is the main recovery feature reserved for Professional.

Recuva’s support documentation says premium editions can create, mount, and recover data from VHD images.

A VHD is a virtual disk file commonly associated with Windows virtualisation and system imaging. It can contain partitions, folders, operating-system files, and user data in a structure that behaves like a physical drive.

Professional may help when:

  • A file was deleted inside a VHD
  • A virtual machine no longer opens normally
  • A Windows disk image contains missing files
  • You want to mount and inspect a supported virtual disk
  • You need to create a VHD-based copy before recovery

Recuva’s VHD tools are useful, but they are not as broad as R-Studio’s virtual-disk and disk-image support. Users working with VMDK, VHDX, VDI, E01, DMG, RAID images, or forensic workflows should consider a more advanced application.

Secure Overwrite

Recuva includes a feature for securely overwriting deleted files so they become much harder to recover.

This is the opposite of its normal purpose. Instead of restoring data, it writes over the remaining file content.

CCleaner promotes the feature as using industry-standard overwrite methods. Its support page explains that users can securely overwrite selected files from the Recuva results.

There are several important limitations:

  • Secure overwrite should not be used on SSDs.
  • It may not remove the old filename from the NTFS Master File Table.
  • It cannot securely overwrite zero-byte files.
  • It cannot securely overwrite very small resident MFT files.
  • Encrypted or compressed file-system entries may not be overwritten normally.
  • Once overwritten, the content cannot be recovered.

CCleaner specifically warns that secure overwrite may be ineffective on SSDs and can add unnecessary wear.

This is not a feature most recovery buyers need. Avoid experimenting with it until every required file has been safely restored and backed up.

Recuva for Windows

Recuva is a Windows application.

The current support documentation lists compatibility with Windows 11, while the public download page still displays an older system-requirements list covering Windows 10, 8.1, 7, Vista, and XP. The product remains available in 32-bit and 64-bit versions for supported Windows systems.

The latest listed release is version 1.55.133. Its release note describes a maintenance change for EU regulatory compliance rather than a major recovery-engine update.

This tells us two things.

Recuva has not disappeared, and a current maintenance release exists. At the same time, buyers should not expect the rapid feature development seen in more expensive products.

Is There a Recuva for Mac?

No official Recuva application is available for macOS.

A Mac user could theoretically run Recuva on Windows and attach a drive that uses a Recuva-supported file system such as exFAT or FAT32. That does not make Recuva a Mac recovery tool.

It does not provide native recovery for:

  • APFS internal storage
  • HFS+ volumes
  • Mac startup recovery
  • Time Machine
  • FileVault workflows
  • Apple Silicon security environments

Mac users should choose software that specifically supports macOS and Apple file systems.

Is There a Recuva App for Android?

There is no official Android version of Recuva.

The official product is a Windows application. Google Play contains apps using “Recuva” in their names, but at least some of those listings explicitly state that they are not affiliated with or endorsed by the Recuva brand or Piriform.

Do not assume that an Android app is official because it uses the Recuva name or a similar icon.

For an Android device with a removable microSD card, the card may be scanned by the official Windows Recuva application through a card reader. Recovering data from modern Android internal storage is a different and much more restricted process.

Recovery Performance and Real-World Expectations

Recuva performs best when the problem is simple.

A recently deleted file on a healthy NTFS hard drive is a strong use case. A formatted memory card containing fragmented video is more difficult. A modern SSD after TRIM is substantially less promising.

ResultWhat it may mean
Green, original name and preview availableStronger recovery chance, but the full file still needs to be tested
Orange statusSome clusters may be overwritten or the file may be fragmented
Red statusRecovery is unlikely to produce a complete usable file
Original name but no previewThe file record may survive while its content is damaged
File found through Deep ScanContent may exist, but original names and folders may be missing
Correct size but file will not openSome storage blocks may contain unrelated data
Thumbnail visible but recovered image is damagedA cached or partial preview may have survived
Video plays only partlyOne or more fragments may be missing
File appears after secure overwriteThe entry may remain, but its content can be unusable gibberish

Recuva’s coloured recovery estimate is useful for sorting results, but CCleaner does not guarantee recovery and advises testing every restored file in its original application.

Recuva is strongest for:

  • Recent Windows deletions
  • NTFS hard drives
  • Recycle Bin recovery
  • Healthy USB drives
  • Smaller documents
  • Recently deleted photos
  • Straightforward memory-card recovery

Recuva is weaker for:

  • Deleted SSD data after TRIM
  • Fragmented FAT files
  • Missing partitions
  • RAID reconstruction
  • APFS and HFS+ drives
  • Physically failing disks
  • Professional camera video
  • Corrupted photo and video repair
  • NAS recovery
  • Non-booting computers

Is Recuva Safe?

Recuva is legitimate software when downloaded from the official CCleaner website or its verified Microsoft Store listing.

Its recovery process is performed locally on the Windows computer. Gen Digital’s product policy says Recuva processes recovery functions on the device, while the company collects certain service and device data such as IP address, product usage events, licence key, launch count, device identifiers, operating-system version, general location, application version, installation time, and hardware details for maintenance, licensing, support, and product improvement.

The main recovery risks come from user actions:

  • Installing Recuva on the affected drive
  • Continuing to use the drive
  • Saving recovered files to the source
  • Running Deep Scan repeatedly on failing hardware
  • Securely overwriting the wrong file
  • Downloading unofficial Android apps
  • Using counterfeit installers or licence keys

Download the application from an official source and keep the source drive unchanged as much as possible.

Recuva Pricing

Recuva has a much simpler product structure than most competitors.

CCleaner Professional PlusCurrent checkout price variesRecuva Professional includedCCleaner Professional, Recuva Pro, Speccy Pro and multi-device coverageHouseholds already wanting the wider CCleaner bundle

The current Recuva page lists Professional at $24.95. CCleaner Professional Plus includes Recuva Pro and Speccy Pro alongside CCleaner tools for up to three devices.

An important pricing detail

The public Recuva page displays the $24.95 price but does not clearly place the licence duration and renewal wording beside it.

Gen Digital’s current cancellation policy includes Recuva among its subscription products and explains annual-subscription refunds and renewals. Buyers should therefore check the final checkout screen and confirmation email for:

  • Licence duration
  • Device count
  • Automatic renewal
  • Future renewal price
  • Tax
  • Included products
  • Cancellation instructions

Do not assume that $24.95 is a permanent lifetime licence unless the checkout explicitly says so.

Is Recuva Professional Worth It?

For ordinary file recovery, usually not.

The current comparison table shows Advanced file recovery in both Free and Professional. The upgrade adds virtual hard drive support, automatic updates, and priority support.

That makes Professional worthwhile in three main situations.

You need VHD recovery

This is the clearest functional reason to upgrade. Professional can work with supported virtual hard drive images.

You need direct support

Data recovery can be confusing even when the software is simple. Priority support may justify $24.95 when the missing data is valuable, and you need help interpreting results.

Support still cannot recover overwritten data or repair a physically failed disk.

You want automatic updates

Automatic updates are convenient but not essential for a one-time recovery. Free users can download updated installers manually.

Recuva Pro does not make sense when:

  • Free already recovered the files.
  • The data was overwritten.
  • The SSD completed TRIM.
  • The drive is physically failing.
  • You need Mac recovery.
  • You need RAID reconstruction.
  • You need photo or video repair.
  • You expect a stronger scan engine simply because you paid.

The $24.95 price is reasonable, but Recuva Free remains the better value for most buyers.

Refund Policy and Cancellation

Gen Digital provides a 30-day money-back guarantee for qualifying Recuva subscriptions purchased directly through its online store.

A qualifying request made within 30 days can receive a refund for the current subscription term. Purchases from physical stores, iTunes, or other resellers follow the reseller’s own policy rather than CCleaner’s direct refund process.

The policy also states that:

  • Requests made after the standard period may not qualify.
  • Services already fully performed may be excluded.
  • Repeated refunds for the same product within six months can be refused.
  • Purchases that violate the licence agreement may not qualify.
  • Regional consumer rules may provide additional rights.

The current Recuva upgrade page describes its purchase as covered by a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Before paying:

  • Confirm the term.
  • Check automatic renewal.
  • Save the confirmation email.
  • Keep the order reference.
  • Test Recuva Free first.
  • Confirm that VHD support or priority support is needed.
  • Review the final renewal price.

Customer Support

Recuva Free users have access to official documentation and the CCleaner community.

Professional adds priority support.

The official help material covers:

  • Wizard recovery
  • Advanced Mode
  • Deep Scan
  • Formatted drives
  • File restoration
  • Original folder structure
  • Secure overwrite
  • Licence registration
  • Refund requests
  • System requirements

The documentation is detailed enough for basic recovery. It is not the same as EaseUS-style remote recovery assistance or a professional recovery laboratory.

Current competitor prices and free limits come from the vendors’ official pages.

Recuva vs EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard

  • Choose Recuva for a basic Windows deletion. Its Free edition can restore files without EaseUS’s total free-recovery limit.
  • Choose EaseUS for broader recovery. EaseUS is better suited to missing partitions, RAW storage, Mac recovery, NAS, bootable crashed-computer recovery, and integrated file repair.
  • Recuva is dramatically cheaper. Recuva Professional currently costs $24.95, while EaseUS Windows pricing starts at $69.95 for one month.
  • EaseUS offers more guidance and support. Its interface and remote-help options are better suited to complicated recoveries.
  • Try Recuva first when the problem is simple. Paying more is unnecessary when Recuva Free already previews and restores the required files.

Recuva vs Disk Drill

  • Choose Recuva for free Windows recovery. Disk Drill’s regular Windows allowance is limited to 100MB.
  • Choose Disk Drill for imaging and protection tools. It offers byte-to-byte backups, recovery protection, drive monitoring, camera recovery, and stronger cross-platform support.
  • Disk Drill supports Windows and Mac under one licence. Recuva remains Windows-only.
  • Recuva is better for a single simple deletion. Disk Drill provides more value when the software will be used repeatedly or across several devices.
  • Both are easy for beginners. Disk Drill looks more modern, while Recuva’s Wizard remains simpler and lighter.

Recuva vs Stellar Data Recovery

  • Choose Recuva when unlimited free recovery matters. Stellar’s Free edition applies a total allowance and an individual-file limit.
  • Choose Stellar for serious recovery tools. Professional editions add missing-partition search, bootable recovery, disk imaging, drive monitoring, and optical-media recovery.
  • Stellar Premium can repair damaged photos and video. Recuva only restores the remaining file data.
  • Recuva has a much simpler product structure. Stellar requires the buyer to choose among several recovery editions.
  • Recuva remains the better first attempt for an ordinary Windows deletion.

Recuva vs Wondershare Recoverit

  • Choose Recuva for free general Windows recovery. It does not restrict ordinary recovery to a small total allowance.
  • Choose Recoverit for camera and video recovery. Its Premium tools focus on fragmented video, SD cards, drones, GoPro devices, and media repair.
  • Recoverit covers Mac, NAS, Linux, and supported RAID scenarios. Recuva is far narrower.
  • Recuva is easier to buy. There is little reason to pay unless VHD support or priority support is required.
  • Recoverit is better when the recovered file also needs repair.

Recuva vs R-Studio

  • Choose Recuva for ease of use. Its Wizard is better for someone recovering a recently deleted Windows file.
  • Choose R-Studio for technical recovery. It supports advanced file systems, disk imaging, virtual disks, RAID reconstruction, and detailed scan controls.
  • Recuva Free has stronger no-cost recovery. R-Studio’s Demo restricts the size of recoverable files.
  • R-Studio offers more paid value for experts. Its $79.99 permanent licence includes substantially broader recovery tools.
  • Recuva is safer for an inexperienced user. R-Studio presents more storage structures and technical decisions.

Recuva vs Ontrack EasyRecovery

  • Choose Recuva for free Windows undelete work. Ontrack’s Free edition limits each recovered file to less than 25MB.
  • Choose Ontrack for a broader guided product family. Paid editions add imaging, optical recovery, drive monitoring, and media repair.
  • Ontrack connects software users with professional recovery services. This is useful when DIY recovery is not safe.
  • Recuva remains cheaper and simpler. It is the better first tool for an accidental deletion from a healthy Windows drive.

Recuva vs TestDisk and PhotoRec

  • All three tools can be used without a recovery-volume fee.
  • Choose Recuva for a visual Windows workflow. It provides a Wizard, previews, recoverability indicators, filename search, and folder views.
  • Choose TestDisk for lost partitions. It can analyse and repair supported partition and boot structures, but its actions require care.
  • Choose PhotoRec for raw signature recovery. It can work across many operating systems and file systems, but commonly loses original filenames and folder structure.
  • Recuva is the easiest starting point. TestDisk and PhotoRec are more flexible when the user understands their technical workflow.

Who Should Use or Skip Recuva?

Buy

  • You use Windows.
  • A file was recently deleted.
  • The Recycle Bin was emptied.
  • The affected hard drive remains healthy.
  • You are recovering from a USB drive.
  • You are recovering photos from a memory card.
  • The drive uses NTFS, FAT, or exFAT.
  • You want unlimited free recovery.
  • You prefer a simple Wizard.
  • You need a quick first scan before buying another tool.
  • You want to see file-condition estimates.
  • You do not need RAID, NAS, Mac, or bootable recovery.

Skip

  • You use macOS.
  • The source uses APFS or HFS+.
  • The partition has disappeared.
  • A RAID array has failed.
  • The computer will not boot.
  • You need a sector-by-sector disk image.
  • The drive is physically unstable.
  • The recovery involves professional camera video.
  • Damaged photos or videos need repair.
  • You need remote NAS recovery.
  • You need a broader Linux or Unix file-system toolset.
  • SSD TRIM has probably removed the data.
  • Recuva Free already scanned the drive without finding credible files and a more advanced scan engine is required.

Frequently Asked Questions [FAQs]

Is Recuva legitimate?

Yes. Recuva is established Windows recovery software available through the official CCleaner website and Microsoft Store. Download it from an official source rather than an unrelated Android app or third-party installer.

Is Recuva really free?

Yes. Recuva Free includes Advanced file recovery and does not publish a total recovery-volume limit. Professional adds virtual hard drive support, automatic updates, and priority support.

Does Recuva Free have a file-size limit?

The official current comparison does not list an individual-file or total recovery-size limit for normal Recuva Free recovery. Whether a large file can be restored successfully still depends on fragmentation, overwriting, and the condition of its storage blocks.

Is Recuva Free as good as Professional for recovery?

For normal file recovery, the current official comparison lists Advanced file recovery in both editions. Professional adds VHD support, automatic updates, and priority support rather than a separately advertised stronger general recovery engine.

How much does Recuva Professional cost?

The current US product page lists Recuva Professional at $24.95. Check the final checkout for the licence term, renewal status, taxes, and future price.

Is Recuva Professional a lifetime licence?

The public page displays the current price without clearly placing the licence term beside it. CCleaner’s refund policy includes Recuva among subscription products, so buyers should rely on the exact wording in the checkout and purchase confirmation rather than assuming lifetime ownership.

Does Recuva automatically renew?

Renewal can depend on the checkout configuration. Review the confirmation email and subscription-management information after purchase. Cancelling renewal should leave the licence active until its current term ends.

Does Recuva offer refunds?

Qualifying subscriptions bought directly through the official store are covered by a 30-day money-back guarantee. Third-party and reseller purchases follow the seller’s policy.

Can Recuva recover permanently deleted files?

It can recover some permanently deleted files when their underlying data has not been overwritten, securely erased, or cleared by SSD TRIM.

Can Recuva recover files after the Recycle Bin is emptied?

Yes. Recuva can search the original drive for deleted file records after the Recycle Bin has been emptied. Success depends on whether the data remains intact.

Can Recuva recover files from a formatted drive?

Recuva can scan newly formatted storage and can be configured to search for non-deleted files on damaged or reformatted drives. Recovery depends on whether the old content was overwritten.

Can Recuva recover data from an SSD?

It can scan SSD storage, but deleted data may no longer exist after TRIM. A successful filename result does not mean the original file content remains available.

Can Recuva recover data from a physically damaged drive?

Recuva may scan a logically damaged drive that remains stable and readable. Stop using it when the drive clicks, overheats, disconnects repeatedly, or has suffered physical damage.

Can Recuva repair corrupted files?

No. Recuva attempts to restore the remaining file data but does not repair the recovered content. Its documentation advises opening restored files in their original applications and notes that overwritten or damaged files may remain unusable.

Does Recuva restore original filenames?

It can preserve filenames, folder paths, and dates when the original file-system records survive. Deep signature recovery may return less organised results.

Can Recuva restore the original folder structure?

Yes, Recuva has an option to restore the original folder structure where the relevant metadata remains available.

What do the green, orange, and red dots mean in Recuva?

Green means Recuva estimates an excellent recovery chance, orange means acceptable, and red means unlikely. The colours are estimates and do not guarantee that the complete file will open.

How long does Recuva Deep Scan take?

The time depends on the drive’s size, speed, connection, and condition. Recuva’s documentation says Deep Scan can take hours.

Can Recuva recover files from an SD card?

Yes. Recuva supports camera memory cards and other readable removable media connected to Windows.

Can Recuva recover deleted videos?

It can recover videos when their storage blocks remain intact. Fragmented video, especially on FAT-formatted memory cards, may not be reconstructed successfully.

Can Recuva recover files from a USB drive?

Yes. USB flash drives are among its main supported recovery devices.

Can Recuva recover a lost partition?

Recuva is not a strong partition-reconstruction tool. TestDisk, R-Studio, Disk Drill, Stellar Professional, or EaseUS are better choices when the partition itself has disappeared.

Does Recuva support RAID?

It may scan a working RAID volume that Windows exposes as a normal drive, but it does not provide advanced RAID reconstruction for a failed array.

Does Recuva work on Mac?

No official macOS version is available. Mac users should choose software with APFS and HFS+ support.

Does Recuva work on Android?

There is no official Android version. Apps using the Recuva name on Google Play may explicitly state that they are not affiliated with Piriform or the official Recuva product.

Should I install Recuva on the affected drive?

Avoid doing so. Installing software can overwrite deleted data. Run Recuva from another Windows installation or healthy drive and save recovered files to a separate destination.

Is Recuva better than EaseUS?

Recuva is better for free, straightforward Windows recovery. EaseUS is broader and easier for missing partitions, Mac recovery, RAW drives, NAS, crashed systems, and file repair.

Is Recuva better than Disk Drill?

Recuva is better when free Windows recovery is the priority. Disk Drill provides stronger imaging, protection, camera, file-system, and cross-platform tools.

Is Recuva better than R-Studio?

Recuva is easier and better for basic deletions. R-Studio is considerably more powerful for RAID, partitions, virtual disks, disk imaging, and advanced file systems.

Is Recuva better than PhotoRec?

Recuva provides a friendlier Windows interface and has a better chance of preserving names and folders when metadata survives. PhotoRec supports more platforms and raw recovery scenarios but often returns generic filenames.

Final Verdict: Is Recuva Worth Using?

Recuva should be one of the first applications a Windows user tries after an ordinary file deletion.

Its Free edition is the main reason.

There is no need to pay before recovering more than 100MB, 500MB, 1GB, or 2GB. Recuva provides its core file recovery tools for free, including Quick Scan, Deep Scan, formatted-drive search, previews, folder views, and recoverability estimates.

That does not make it the best recovery software for every situation.

Recuva is weaker when the problem involves a missing partition, complex file-system damage, RAID, NAS storage, a non-booting computer, APFS, damaged camera footage, or a physically failing drive. It also cannot reverse SSD TRIM or restore overwritten content.

Use Recuva Free when the loss is simple and the drive is healthy.

Upgrade to Recuva Professional only when virtual hard drive support or priority assistance matters.

The $24.95 Professional price is reasonable, but paying does not unlock a dramatically stronger recovery engine. That makes Recuva different from most freemium recovery software: its Free edition is not merely a preview tool. It is the main product most home users need.

Our recommendation is to stop using the affected storage, run Recuva Free from another drive or computer, start with the normal scan, and use Deep Scan only when necessary. Preview several files, recover the most valuable items first, and save everything to a separate destination.

Scores and Experience

Recuva Data Recovery Software
8 10 0 1
Recuva offers one of the most honest free experiences in consumer data recovery. It allows Windows users to complete ordinary recoveries without placing the useful feature behind a paywall, and its Wizard makes the first attempt easy. The software becomes less persuasive when a recovery involves missing partitions, RAID, Mac storage, SSD TRIM, or damaged media. Recuva is not the most advanced product in this comparison, but it is often the best place to begin.

8/10
Total Score iScores based on our tests
  • Free Recovery
    10/10 The best
Recuva Free provides normal file recovery without a published total data allowance. Unlike many competitors, it does not make users pay merely to save files that the scan has already found.
  • Ease of Use
    9/10 Amazing
The Wizard makes basic recovery easy, while Advanced Mode adds filename searches, filters, folder views, thumbnails, and recovery-condition details. The interface looks dated but remains practical.
  • Basic Recovery
    8/10 Very good
Recuva performs well as a first option for recently deleted files on healthy Windows storage. Its value falls when file-system metadata is missing or files are heavily fragmented.
  • Advanced Recovery Coverage
    5/10 Neutral
Recuva lacks dedicated RAID reconstruction, NAS recovery, bootable media, broad disk imaging, Mac support, and integrated file repair. It cannot replace R-Studio, Disk Drill, Stellar Professional, or Recoverit Premium for difficult cases.
  • Pricing and Value
    9/10 Amazing
The Free edition provides exceptional value, and Professional costs only $24.95. The paid upgrade is less compelling because normal recovery is already included for free.
  • Professional Upgrade
    6/10 Normal
Virtual hard drive support and priority assistance can justify the price for some users. Automatic updates alone are not a strong reason to upgrade, and Professional does not make overwritten files recoverable.
  • Support and Refund Terms
    8/10 Very good
Professional includes priority support, while qualifying direct purchases receive a 30-day refund period. Buyers should still confirm licence duration and renewal details at checkout.
